The countdown to Christmas has officially begun and, for those of you lucky enough to be spending it in our sparkling city, we’ve hand-picked some of the merriest events in and around town that you won’t want to miss at this most wonderful time of the year!


Times Square

There’s nothing quite like wrapping up warm on a cold winter’s night and heading out for a whirl on the ice at the Centre for Life’s open-air rink. Gliding around under the Centre’s illuminated glass front isn’t just great fun, it’s great exercise too! Plus, you’re perfectly positioned to warm up afterward in your choice Newcastle’s many restaurants and bars.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Oh no it isn’t! Oh yes it is, time for this year’s sparkling panto performances! Catch the Theatre Royal’s glamorous production of Goldilocks and the Three Bears all December. Or, choose Cinderella at one of our city’s oldest and most magical venues, Tyne Theatre & Opera House, from the 7th.


Saltwell Park, Gateshead

4-9th Dec

See Saltwell Park transformed into a magical and mythical wonderland at this year’s Enchanted Parks event. From incredible illuminations to awesome art installations, this year’s theme, ‘The House of Lost and Found’ is all set to capture imaginations and bring the park to life as it celebrates the feeling that comes when two things that have been separate, come together once more…


Grainger Market

6th Dec, 5:30pm

Back by popular demand and for one night only, Grainger Market will be keeping its doors open late and hosting an eclectic evening of first-class festivities. Browse the market’s illuminated isles for bargains whilst delighting in the bustling atmosphere, complete with street food stalls, free live music and delicious taster samples from an array of local businesses.

And if you can’t get enough of foraging for festive treasures, try Tyne Bank Brewery’s X-MAS Market! on the 8th or head over to St James’ Park for Festive Fayre on the 17th and 18th.

Netflix reality star Alyssa Edwards is sashaying, fresh from your screens to Boiler Shop this December for an evening of comedy, excitement and, of course, dancing, queen!

Plus, if drag’s your bag, don’t miss Miss Rory bringing her glittering presence and award-winning humour to the Tyne Theatre & Opera House for ‘A Christmas Rory II’ on the 17th!

Camel Parade

South Shields

7th Dec, 5pm

We all know that nothing says Christmas like a parade of adorned camels, and as such South Shields is welcoming you to take your place on Ocean Road and marvel at this year’s colourful caravan of Christmas camels. Plus, enjoy amazing street entertainment including illuminated characters, stilt walkers and Spark! Drummers, before grabbing a spot for the fabulous fireworks finale.

Sing-a-long Muppet Christmas Carol

Gosforth Civic Theatre

Dec 9th, 7:30pm

It’s in the singing of a street corner choir, it’s going home and getting warm by the fire. It’s true wherever you find Muppets, it feels like Christmas! Join Kermit, Miss Piggy and fellow fans of this heart-warming festive classic for a rip-roaring singalong at Gosforth Civic Theatre. After all, there’ll only be 16 more sleeps ’til Christmas.

University Carol Service

King’s Hall

13th Dec, 6:00pm

Join us in celebrating Christmas as only Newcastle University knows how. Gather at the oldest part of campus, the Quadrangle, from 4pm and witness our Christmas tree lit up in all its glory, before surrounding yourself in the grandeur of King’s Hall from 6pm for our annual Carol Service.

Winter Solstice Concert

Pop your hard hats on and get ready for a performance like no other. Experience this intimate, pitch black concert within Newcastle’s maze of 19th century underground tunnels. Enjoy mince pies and piping hot mulled wine along with three of Steve Luck’s recently composed pieces, each evoking a different aspect of winter.



31st December, Midnight

The most eagerly anticipated event in the Toon calendar, join a crowd of thousands in ringing in the new year as a breath-taking firework display illuminates one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, the Tyne Bridge. Experience New Year as a fully-fledged Geordie whilst enjoying the many popular bars and restaurants of the Quayside at your disposal – what’s not to love?

Alternatively, if you can’t stay up to ring in the New Year, head to the Town Moor for their brand new East of the Sun, West of the Moon celebrations from 4pm or catch the Civic Centre’s much-loved firework display at 6pm.

Plus, we’ll be running a number of fun group activitis exclusively for students staying in Newcastle over the festive period. So if you’re not going home for Christmas you can still join in the fun!
