Our tree is up, the lights are shining brightly and we’ve even been treated to a sprinkling of snow on campus! The countdown to Christmas has officially begun and, for those of you lucky enough to be spending it in our sparkling city, we’ve hand-picked some of the merriest events in town you won’t want to miss at this most wonderful time of the year.
1st Dec, 5pm
Back by popular demand and for one night only, Grainger Market will be keeping its doors open late and hosting an eclectic evening of first-class festivities. Browse the market’s illuminated isles for bargains whilst delighting in the bustling atmosphere, complete with street food stalls, free live music and delicious taster samples from an array of local businesses.
See Saltwell Park transformed into a magical and mythical wonderland at this year’s Enchanted Parks event. From incredible illuminations to awesome art installations, this year’s theme, ‘The Inventors’ Ball’ is all set to capture imaginations and bring the park to life as it reveals the mysterious tale of Ursula Wailes, heiress to the Saltwell Towers Estate…
6th December, 6pm
A one-off event like no other, hone your artistic skills whilst being treated to a special performance from a talented local artist, storyteller and musician – who also happens to be your life drawing model! So, relax, grab a sketch pad and bring an open mind, it’s sure to be a theatrical spectacle you won’t soon forget.
8th December, 5.30pm
From the Mad Hatter’s chaotic tea party to the clutches of Jabberwocky’s claws, join Alice as she ventures down the rabbit hole and into a topsy-turvy world of imagination that only gets curiouser and curiouser… Held at one of our favourite theatre venues, Northern Stage, join Give it a Go’s trip any enjoy a special student discount.
9th December, 10.30am
Litter picking claws at the ready! Help dispel messy-student stereotypes and lend local residents a helping hand by joining Give it a Go in cleaning up the streets of Jesmond this December. A fantastic opportunity to give back to your local community whilst making one or two new friends along the way, let’s help keep Jesmond beautiful together.
11th December, 7pm
Gather in the glittering Great Hall of Wylam Brewery for a night of glitz and glamour at one of Swingers’ most anticipated student events. Enjoy a champagne reception and red carpet style entrance followed by an evening of great food, drink and dancing until you drop, all culminating in a spectacular firework finale!

Let’s face it, what is December without those fuzzy Christmas films we all love to watch again and again? This year, the Tyneside Cinema is giving you the chance to catch your favourite classics on the big screen, and with such gems as The Muppet Christmas Carol, Die Hard and Home Alone on offer, you’ll be spoilt for choice. So, make this one a merry movie-filled Christmas, you filthy animals!

Offering a winter wonderland of festive delights at one of the city’s trendiest venues, grab some exclusive stocking-fillers from a selection of the finest product and talent traders in the North East. The most eagerly anticipated event in the Toon calendar, join a crowd of thousands in ringing in the new year as a breath-taking firework display illuminates one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, the Tyne Bridge. Experience New Year as a fully-fledged Geordie whilst enjoying the many popular bars and restaurants of the Quayside at your disposal – what’s not to love?
