Top 10 things to do in February

Say goodbye to the January blues and hello to all the great events happening in February!

1. University Vintage Fair

Head down to the SU on 6 February for the one stop pop up shop for all your vintage needs! There will be a massive collection of clothes from the 80’s and 90’s all at a student friendly price and with free entry to the event there’s no reason why you shouldn’t go! More details about this event can be found online.

2. Thai Kwondo

From the guys who did Battle of the Burger comes THAI KWONDO where 8 food vendors and restaurants will battle against one another for all things Thai! The event takes place at Wylam Brewery starting at 5pm 3 February and midday on 4th February. It’s free entry and only £3 per food portion at the vendors!


3. Freedom City 2017 Lecture: The courage to listen

This will be the first INSIGHTS public lecture talk in the Freedom City programme and will be given by Reverend Jeffrey L Brown. The event takes place on 21st February and features an interesting talk about bringing together conflicting constituencies in civil society for peace.

4. Ice Skating at Centre for Life

It’s your final chance to get your skates on and head down to Newcastle’s only outdoor ice rink! The ice rink at the Centre for Life will be disappearing on 26th February so make sure you head down soon to avoid disappointment. Don’t forget there are special deals for student tickets.

5. ‘From Medicine With love’

Organised by the Medicine in Literature and the Arts at Newcastle Collective (MiLAN), this film festival explores health based narratives through films such as Still Alice, Wall-E and others. The event will be running from Monday 13th February to Friday 17th February in the David Shaw lecture theatre at the Medical School.  6. Krispy Kreme Factory Tour and Doughnut dip

Give it a Go run by NUSU has come up with a whole new host of activities for this semester! If you’re a lover of Krispy Kreme then you better not miss out on this one, for the bargain price of £5 you will get a tour of the Krispy Kreme factory, learn the history of donut, the doughnut dance and even decorate your very own chocolate sprinkle donut! Make sure you don’t miss out by getting your tickets here!

7. Newcastle Preloved Weigh ‘n’ Pay

Shopaholics will be pleased this month as there are two vintage fairs happening in the city. This fair has a slightly different twist as upon entry to the fair you are given a bag. Once you’ve filled your bag the staff at the event will weigh it so you can see how much you’ve spent. The clothing is only £15 per kilo so you’ll certainly be grabbing some bargains here.

The event takes place on Saturday 4th February and tickets can be bought on the door or online for just £1.50.

8. Bones: Skeleton Secrets of the Animal World

The Great North Museum Hancock is putting their enormous collection of animal skeletons on show for 2017’s must see exhibition. From bats to whales there’s bones, teeth and fossils from over 100 creatures. The exhibition will run from Saturday 4th February to Sunday 14th May which gives you loads of time to get down and see a giant whale bone for yourself. With free entry there really is no excuse to miss it!

9. Handmade cosmetics with Lush

Another event hosted by Give it a Go that is not to be missed! Come along to this exclusive handmade cosmetics workshop where you’ll get to make a Creamy Candy Bubble Bar and Butterball Ballistic to take away and enjoy at home. Be sure to get your ticket soon as this event is one of the most popular Give it a Go activities!

10. Central Oven and Shaker

If you haven’t noticed yet a brand new trendy pizza restaurant has opened down by Central Station called Central Oven and Shaker. Throughout the whole of February they are offering 50% student discount on their delicious pizzas.
