Top 10 Things to do in May

Whether you’re looking for a fun day out or something to do as a revision break you won’t want to miss out on these events!

1. Trump in the age of Captain America/Captain America in the age of Trump Insights Public Lecture


Professor Jason Dittmer from University College London will be visiting campus on Thursday 4th May to look at Donald Trump’s populism, power and pugnaciousness in Captain America. This event will take in the Curtis Auditorium at 5.30pm. 

Be sure to get there early as seats are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

2.First Year Fest


First Year Fest is an exclusive event hosted on Tuesday 9th May by the Careers Service for first year students. The day will be packed with information, guidance and activities to take part in to help you develop your CV, find out more about placements, have a professional LinkedIn photo taken and find out more about starting a business. Oh…and did we mention that there are free pastries, cake and pizza too?

3. Newcastle Start Up Week


Thinking about setting up a business or interested in finding out more about entrepreneurship? Then get yourself to Newcastle Start Up Week, a 5 day multi-venue festival happening all over the city. Talks will cover inspiration, getting started, funding and finance and so on.  You will also have the opportunity to meet successful entrepreneurs from the region and to chat with other inspirational people. This event will take place 15th- 19th May 2017 and lucky for you students can get tickets for just £20!

4.The Bridge presents UK HIP HOP


The Bridge presents an evening of the best UK Hip Hop and Grime on 6th May 2017 taking place at the Sage Gateshead. The event features various famous artists old and new such as Blade, Katch 22 and many more.

5. Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo


Give it a Go are offering a full day of adventure perfect for thrill seekers and animal lovers alike. Flamingo Land has something for everyone from record breaking rides such as the Mumbo Jumbo to a massive zoo full of wild animals such as giraffes and penguins. For £25 including travel and entry to the park this event is a bargain and tickets will snapped up quickly!

This event takes place on 6th May, meeting outside the Hatton Gallery at 8am.

6. Weekend Adventure Break to the Pennines


Fancy spending the day at one of the wildest natural adventure spots in the North? With this exciting trip from Give it a Go you can walk and climb through a gorge, get your photo taken under a 70ft waterfall and try out white water tubing. Your evening meal and breakfast for the next day is included and then you have the option to watch a movie in the accommodation or experience the dark skies of Northumberland.

This event takes place on 6th May, meeting outside the Hatton Gallery. Tickets cost £75 which includes your accommodation, meals and activity costs.

7. The Late Shows

The Late Shows is back again and even bigger this year! If you haven’t been before then you should put this event at the top of your to do list and remember it’s free entry!

On the 19th and 20th of May museums, galleries, studio collectives and landmark historical buildings will come together to offer visitors fantastic one-off events including hands-on workshops, behind-the-scenes tours, performances and parties.

8. The Boat Race of the North


The annual boat race between our Rowing Club and Durham Universities Rowing Club will be taking place on the River Tyne on Saturday 6th May. The first race is at 1.30pm and it’s going to be a busy event so make sure you get down there early!

9. Dino Jaws at Life Science Centre

On May 27th Dino Jaws is coming to the Life Science Centre. This amazing exhibition is coming to Newcastle all the way from the Natural History Museum and it will feature life-size animatronic dinosaur heads – including the terrifying T. rex!

The best thing about this event is that it’s included in your general admission which means you also get to see all of the other fabulous attractions the Life Science Centre has to offer. Find out more on the Life Science Centre’s website.

10. Evolution Emerging

Evolution Emerging is the North East’s biggest event for new music and annually it presents over 40 exciting emerging artists!

This event takes place on Saturday 27th May at 2pm and gigs will be hosted in various venues around Ouseburn Valley.
