Thinking about what to do in October? Here’s the top 10 events taking place in the city.

1. Charrette Week

School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape’s Charrette Week 2015

Charrette Week is run by the Newcastle University School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape and the students are given challenges throughout the week. They must work together to come up with interesting and unique solutions! The final results  are pretty amazing and it’s great to head over and have a look at their work! If you can’t make it in person you can follow their progress using #NCLcharrette.

This year Charrette Week will run from 3- 7th October 2016.

2. Mystery Jets

Wylam Brewery is the popular new destination for events, originally famous for brewing their own beer they are now growing their reputation for hosting fantastic events. Does Battle of the Burger ring any bells? The popular band Mystery Jets and supporting acts will be playing here on 6th October, doors open at 7pm and tickets are available online.

3. The Metro Challenge

Give it a Go run by NUSU has came up with a whole host of activities that you can take part in this Semester. However one that particularly stood out was the Metro Challenge, you’ll be split into teams and given fun challenges to complete and you journey towards the coast!  The day concludes with a celebration of the winners in tasty Tynemouth cafe!

The Metro Challenge has a small charge of £5 and will take place on 8th October, meet outside the NUSU for 2pm.

4. Big Draw 2016: Big Plan

Can you imagine what Newcastle will look like in 2065? On the 8th and 9th October at Seven Stories you can get involved in the Urban Living Project led by Newcastle University to help build a giant model of NewcastleGateshead and draw your own blue print!

There is also a workshop taking place on the 9th October where you will have the opportunity to work with the YES Planning team at Newcastle University to explore urban planning

5. INSIGHTS Public Lecture

INSIGHTS is a programme run by the university that offers free lectures to the public. Many of the speakers are leaders in their field and have something of special interest to convey. On the 11th October, Professor Dianna Bowles will be lecturing on Science, Sheep and Amber Ale discussing the responsibility we have to use science to benefit our society. 

The event will be taking place in the Curtis Auditorium at 17:30.

6. Trip to Beamish Wild

Another event hosted by Give it a Go! This time you will be up in the trees on a high ropes course full of challenges such as zip wires, rope bridges and swinging tires! It will be a fantastic day out that’s certainly not for the faint hearted.

The event will be taking place on the 19th of October meeting outside NUSU for 1pm. Tickets cost £12 and you can purchase them online.

7. Lost and Escape: Magic Castle

You have accidentally entered into a magic castle. Suddenly you have found you and your team poisoned. You only have 60 minutes to find 6 Antidotes and mix them in the right order to save you and your team! This is a great challenge for testing your skills and thinking outside the box, it’s also a great way to make new friends.

This event will be taking place 24th October meeting outside the NUSU at 5:30pm. Tickets cost £10 and you can purchase them online.

8. Game and Grill

Another cool event hosted by Wylam Brewery! This time they have a massive selection of old gaming consoles from the last 30 years and a selection of BBQ grub for you to feast on! Tickets start at just £12.50 and are available online. The event takes place on the 22nd October and doors open at 7pm.

9. Friday Night Life

Explore the Centre for Life after hours when it is transformed into a dark and mysterious place. The planetarium will be showing all kinds of short horror stories that will be sure to get your spine tinging and if that wasn’t enough to scare you there will also be a mini zoo of creepy crawlies.

This event takes place on 28th October at the Centre for Life and you can book tickets online for just £8

10. Oktober Fest

Oktoberfest will take place in Times Square and is celebrated in a giant marquee with a capacity of 1,800 seats. There will be German bands and other performances as well as traditional German drinks and foods such as SchnitzelsThere is free entry and deals for students on the Thursday evening. However, you will need to pay on the Friday and Saturday.

The event takes place from 27th- 30th of October and you can book tickets online.
