May has arrived and with it comes the first sprinklings of summer sun, a campus in full bloom and a whopping two Bank Holidays to enjoy! Here are our top event picks to enjoy this month…
1st – 4th May
Back for its fifth year and with an ever increasingly impressive line-up of some of the art world’s most acclaimed practitioners, join this four day festival in celebrating poetry in all its forms. From readings, discussions and workshops to exhibitions, live music and even a poetry competition, enjoy top notch poems in the elegant venues of Northern Stage and Sage Gateshead.
3-4th & 24-25th May
Let the food battle commence! From the team that annually brings us the ever popular Burger Battle, this time ready to crown the Toon’s top pizza parlour at ‘Revenge of the Slice’ and find out who’s king of the grills at ‘Grill a Warfare’. Inviting vendors from across the region to step up to the challenge of making the tastiest dish for just £3, who will reign supreme? Come along, get tasting and have your say!
7th – 18th May
From captivating cygnets to flawless feathers, Matthew Bourne brings his sparkling rendition of Tchaikovsky’s magical fairy-tale to the Theatre Royal this month. Complete with dazzling sets, glittering costumes and performed by an entirely male corps-de-ballet; Swan Lake is an enchanting, convention shattering production, not to be missed!

Not for the faint-hearted, Give it a Go are headed to the North Pennines for a full day of adrenaline-fuelled fun this May! Jump, climb and explore stunning natural gorges before taking on the thrills and exciting spills of white water tubing. Plus, round off your day with an Insta-worthy group snap under a breath-taking 70ft waterfall.
Brave the waves and learn to surf at Tynemouth Beach with Give it a Go! From getting to grips with the equipment to riding your very first gnarly wave, this two hour session is perfect for beginners and is sure to cause a splash.
13th – 17th May
Thinking about setting up your own business? Then get yourself along to Newcastle Start Up Week, a five day multi-venue festival happening all over the city. Feel inspired by motivating talks on getting started, financing and scaling up your business, as well as networking with some of the region’s top entrepreneurial talent.

17th – 18th May
Discover the city’s finest museums, galleries, studios and historical buildings, and delight in the unique events taking place after dark. Now in its 12th year, The Late Shows offer a fascinating perspective, with venues opening their doors for exclusive workshops, behind-the-scenes tours, performances and parties.
Hang out with musicians, DJs and digital sound artists at Newcastle Castle, enjoy an interactive UV experience at Ouseburn Farm or even have a go at animating your own masterpiece in the Hatton Gallery! Plus, don’t miss your chance to see the mighty Dippy after dark as part of his UK tour at Great North Museum.
20th – 22nd May
For the fourth year running, Pint of Science Festival is bringing big ideas to little venues and offering a huge range of thought-provoking talks on topics ranging from mental health to climate change. So, pop along to your local pub, grab a drink and settle down to take in top researchers sharing their fascinating discoveries this May!
24th – 26th May
