Top 12 Things to do in June

June is a month of festivals, celebrations and (hopefully!) sunshine here in Newcastle. If you’re sticking around this summer, you’ll not want to miss these top events…

Newcastle Foodies Festival, Exhibition Park

From Michelin stars to street food cars, gorge yourself on a wealth of gastronomic delights at this year’s Foodies Festival! Enjoy top local produce, demos, competitions and live music before rubbing shoulders with leading cuisine celebs from Bake Off, Great British Menu and MasterChef.

New Music Mondays, Super Natural Café

Not content with simply offering a delicious array of vegetarian and vegan food stuffs, Super Natural Café is now serving up a weekly helping of original live music to boot! So, grab a veggie burger, an almond milk latte and make some new friends as you kick back to sweet tunes at this weekly pay-what-you-feel event.

From responsibly shedding your leftover clothes, books and cutlery to clearing your cupboards of unused food, our environmentally savvy students at Leave Newcastle Happy and Do What Tastes Right! have you covered this summer. You can even get involved with an end of term litter pick and do your bit to help leave our fabulous city sparkling!

David Bowie Party, No28

Dance magic dance the night away at No28’s David Bowie themed bash. Delight in a free screening of Jim Henson’s cult classic, Labyrinth, before getting your groove on to Ashes to Ashes, Let’s Dance, Ziggy Stardust, Jean Genie and many more. We don’t know where you’ll go from there, but we promise it won’t be boring!

Gin Festival, Newcastle Racecourse

Aptly taking place on World Gin Day, sample a mammoth range of exquisite gins from around the world at the UK’s biggest Gin Festival right here in Newcastle. Throw in some tasty food, live music, masterclasses, a brilliant atmosphere and a slice of lime; and let the festivities beGIN!

Evolution Emerging 2018, Various venues, Ouseburn Valley

Set to return for its 10th year, Evolution Emerging showcases the region’s best new music from up and coming artists in the heart of the picturesque Ouseburn Valley. Gracing the stages of popular venues such as Tyne Bar and The Cluny, as well as brand new venues Cobalt Studios and Backyard Bike Shop, this year’s event is set to be bigger, better and more booming than ever before.

Colour Obstacle Rush, Newcastle Racecourse

20 obstacles, 20 music zones, 8 colour stations and 5k; the challenge is set. Slip on your running shoes and head to Newcastle Racecourse for the most eccentric fun run in town. Think inflatables, foam cannons, slides and space hoppers – getting fit for summer has never been such a blast!

Great Northern Soul Food, Boiler Shop

Another one for foodies, as one of the city’s trendiest venues, Boiler Shop, welcomes finger-licking street food from some of the North’s finest vendors to their quirky Grade II* listed setting. Get ready to enjoy great food, live music and a buzzing atmosphere through the day, before the finest soul, funk, reggae and disco DJs set the dance floor alight in the evening.

Plus, if you’re a fan of all things reggae check out Newcastle Rum and Reggae Festival or, if Boiler Shop is your bag, Warmer Days Festival boasts an impressive line-up of some of the finest underground electronic artists around!

Did you know 2018 marks the 250th birthday of circus in Britain? To celebrate Cirque Berserk! are bringing a spectacular show of traditional circus acts to the grand setting of our very own Tyne Theatre Opera House. Think jugglers, acrobats, aerialists and even one or two death-defying stunts including knife throwing and their legendary motorcycle ‘Globe of Death’!

The much anticipated Great Exhibition of the North finally arrives with an out of this world line-up set to blow your mind this June. As well as a breath-taking opening event featuring the UK’s largest water sculpture gracing the banks of the Tyne, we’ve hand-picked one or two events you’ll not want to miss…

Ever wondered what it’s like to work 110m above the waves on one of the world’s biggest offshore wind turbines? Wonder no more with an Immersive Hybrid Reality (iHR) headset at the USB Building.

Experience innovations that could soon revolutionise everyday life with Future Homes at Newcastle Helix, or design your own future world where anything is possible at Northern Stage’s Self-Build Utopias exhibition.

An event that needs no introduction, June sees the return of everyone’s favourite annual Town Moor bonanza, the Hoppings! Grab a candy floss, hook a duck or enjoy the thrills and spills of over 300 rides at Europe’s largest travelling funfair.
