Winter is just around the corner and with it comes a whole host of sparkling events to brighten up the city. Warm up with our hand-picked list of top events to enjoy this November.

Saltwell Park Fireworks, Gateshead

3 November

One of the largest shows in the area and boasting to be bigger and better than ever before, Saltwell Park is all set for another huge firework extravaganza in 2018! Hosted by Metro Radio, enjoy live music from some of the North East’s best emerging talent alongside rides, stalls and one of the largest displays you’re likely to catch.

Fancy yourself as the next Scorsese but not sure how to capture that perfect shot? Get your mitts on quality camera equipment and Give it a Go at the Film Society’s Cinematography Workshop!

Newcastle Christmas Lights Switch On, Monument

8th November, from 5.30pm (lights at 6.30pm)

With the clocks back and days getting shorter, the city prepares to be adorned once more with almost 20,000 sparkling Christmas lights. Meet at Grey’s Monument and join an expected 5,000 strong crowd and local celebrities in lighting up our streets with a dazzling injection of festive cheer.

9 November

Let the Curry Battle commence! Hosting a spicy alternative to your more traditional winter warmer celebrations, Wylam Brewery opens its doors once again, inviting vendors from across the region to step up to the challenge if they think they’re hot enough. Who will be crowned king of the curries? Come along, get tasting and have your say!

Stargazing, Kielder Observatory

11 November

A trip to Kielder Observatory is on the bucket list of many a Geordie, and now’s your chance to set out and experience its dark skies at a discounted rate with Give it a Go! Informed Astronomers will introduce you to stargazing and inspire you with their knowledge of seasons, eclipses and the ecliptic.

Newcastle Christmas Market, Monument

16 November – 16 December

Head to the town centre and enjoy festive treats and tastes from around the globe at this year’s International Christmas Market. From sweet French crepes and Italian biscotti to mouth-watering German currywurst and Spanish paella, you’re sure to leave with a belly as full as your bag of one-off stocking fillers!

The Nutcracker, Tyne Theatre & Opera House

16 November

From dancing snowflakes to the land of sweets, the Russian State Ballet brings their sparkling rendition of Tchaikovsky’s magical fairy-tale to the Tyne Theatre Opera House. Complete with dazzling sets, glittering costumes and accompanied by a live 30 piece orchestra; the Nutcracker is an enchanting production, not to be missed!

Now’s your chance to appreciate the UK’s largest dedicated contemporary art institution against the illuminated backdrop of the dazzling Quayside at this special late night opening. Delight in BALTIC Late‘s one-off talks, book-making and performance, as well as their latest intriguing exhibitions.

Home Alone Live with Royal Northern Sinfonia, Sage Gateshead

25 November

Experience the Royal Northern Sinfonia’s epic take on everyone’s favourite fuzzy Christmas flick.
