Top 5 alternative nights out in Newcastle

A Picture of Alex

Newcastle gets a lot of press about its amazing nightlife, but something that’s often overlooked is the plethora of other activities that the city holds. If you’re looking at coming to Newcastle, but don’t always fancy clubbing, there will almost certainly be something for you. Here are the top 5 alternative events in Newcastle.

The Stand

First is comedy club, The Stand. This is an excellent replacement for a night out in clubs and arguably, more fun! At street level is a small restaurant, yet once you descend a staircase near the back you will appear in a surprisingly large performance space. Most often they have four acts performing over the course of the night, from the well-established to the beginners on the circuit. Every visit will have you leaving in stiches!

Head of Steam

Number two is Head of Steam. This bar come live music venue, set near central station, is incredibly trendy. When entering, going up will take you to one of the coolest student bars in Newcastle whilst going down will take you to the live music arena, known as ‘The Cellar’, with another bar. This is known as one of the best bars due to its brilliant up to date music taste. The Cellar stage has been graced by up and coming acts gone large such as Arctic Monkeys and Maximo Park.

Tyneside Cinema

If music isn’t your thing then towards the bottom of Northumberland Street lies the Tyneside Cinema. This cinema is an independent mini theatre not showing regular films that have just come out, but older films, cult classics and sometimes documentaries.  Unlike normal cinemas, this one allows entry from £1 depending on the film. A fun, unique and relaxed experience, the Tyneside Cinema can be a great night out.

Aspers Casino

This one might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if your student loan comes in and you’re feeling rich, you can try Aspers Casino. Based at the top of the Gate, the playing room is vast and includes a sports bar as well as a range of different games on the floor. Roulette is a fantastic game for the beginner whilst the experienced player can engage in a poker tournament, ranging from free buy in to the real high roller games. This alternative night is incredibly different from clubbing and can be a great experience for those who have never been to a casino before.

The Cluny

Another live music venue is The Cluny. Seen as one of the best intimate venues in the UK, it has a capacity of just 300. This means that bands often interact with the crowd, creating a more vibrant atmosphere. If clubbing isn’t your scene because of the music then this is the perfect replacement, as it hosts mainly indie artists rather than house and chart music, meaning you can be the one to discover the next big thing.
