Top 5 Lunch Spots in Newcastle

A Picture of Jenny

As a fledgling grown-up, the constant task of food shopping and cooking can get tiring. Sometimes all you want is to get out of your routine and experience a lunch other than plain pasta or your usual Greggs’ sausage roll.

So, why not try one of the following lunch spots, all located around the University and no more than 15 minutes’ walk. The fresh air you’ll get in your break will only help you to get more and even better ideas!

Shijo is a perfect place for students, combining great Japanese food with low prices. You can either sit in, or order your delicious Chicken Katsu as a Takeaway. Either way, you can enjoy the quirky upside-down plants and sticky notes on the wall, whilst catching up with their friendly, hard working staff. There’s no better place to enjoy a quick hot meal.

Short on cash and fancy a sandwich? Eat4Less is the cheapest lunch option in Newcastle. Joining the long queues that stretch out the door every lunchtime are as much a part of the experience as the amazing £1.99 meal deal.

Don’t expect a gourmet sandwich, but their baguette, fries and a drink meal will definitely satisfy your hunger. The food is great value and the price is brilliant, especially when you’re on a student budget!

Olive & Bean

Olive & Bean is my favourite café in Newcastle. A place I would happily take my mom in order to show off Newcastle. A tad more on the pricey side, Olive & Bean offers a great variety of salads, sandwiches and smoothies you can eat in a pleasant atmosphere.

My personal highlight is the brownie bar – looking at all those sweet treats will make your mouth water – it offers everything the heart desires. So, will it be a ‘Cookie Dough Brownie’ or a ‘Cranberry Dark Chocolate and Ginger Tiffin’ for you?

Grainger Market

grainger-2Grainger Market is THE place to go to for fresh food. Everyone knows that shopping can make you very hungry, so why not combine it with a quick food stop?

The restaurants in Grainger Market represent many different nationalities. From croissants at the French bakery to dumplings at the Chinese restaurant, or even a pizza from the Italian takeaway, you’ll find something for everyone. Definitely worth a visit!

Quilliam Brothers’ Teahouse

A place you will never want to leave. When you enter Quilliam Brothers you automatically feel relaxed; the atmosphere is busy and at the same time laid-back and reassuring.

From students working on their essays to catch-ups with friends or family meetings, everyone is in tea heaven with over 100 different flavours to choose from. And, if you can’t bring yourself to get up from their comfortable sofas after just one cup, they stay open until 1am, meaning you can enjoy tea and snacks all day long!
