Podcast and Media Training – Communicate with Confidence and Influence

We have a few limited places left for some exciting, specialist media training being held next week. The training is available to PhD and ECR social scientists across the NINE DTP institutions, in preparation for a series of podcasts to be run by Newcastle University via the ESRC Accelerating Business Collaboration (ABC) fund. Please read through the details below and if it sounds like something you would be interested in please let us know ASAP. As there are a handful of places left, this will be allocated on a first come first serve basis and attendees must be able to commit to the full day of training.

Communicate with Confidence and Influence – Wednesday 14th October 2020

This training can be seen as being run in two parts. The first part is an intensive one day session run by Jo Darby from Voice in the Room. Due to recent restrictions, this session will be delivered online over Zoom.

This workshop focuses on how to present your research effectively both in person and remotely, via screen and microphone. After completing Communicate with Confidence and Influence, participants will:

  • Understand how to harness their speaking nerves and use them to positive effect Training Outcomes.
  • Understand any body language or vocal habits that may have been affecting their ability to communicate effectively.
  • Know how increase the clarity of message delivery and create powerful openings and closings that can engage any audience.
  • Know how to use stories to strengthen key points and increase credibility.
  • Understand their natural style of communication and how to adapt this to connect with different types of audience, including via the screen or microphone.
  • Know how to use voice to build presence and increase the ability to persuade and influence.
  • Know how to increase gravitas whilst maintaining authenticity.
  • Receive personalised feedback on their communication style and action points for future use.

This session is in preparation for the second part of training; the potential to record a podcast about your research for a series we have commissioned with the team at Inspire North. If you take part in the training, we also expect you to be engaged in this process too, and if appropriate, your research will be featured in the series that will explore social science research and its wider connection to and impact on industry.  These podcasts will begin recording in October 2020 until March 2021 and more details will be supplied about this once you complete the training.  This will be an excellent opportunity to gain experience both in the podcasting process and a chance to present your research topic to a wider audience.

Please contact Victoria Barone at hass.researchteam@newcastle.ac.uk to indicate your interest.

It is really important you can commit to the training to ensure those attending can get the most out of the session, with lots of interaction and group work.
