Safety Net Video: Tom Ward

Colleagues,

Please note below an update from Tom Ward on the potential use of a Safety Net for this academic year should the need arise. He has recorded a video which is going out to students via the University’s newsletter next Thursday 21 October. The video sets out the institutional approach to assessment and the  approach in the event of another lockdown.  We will agree as a School if we wish to release any more information to NUBS students following the release of the video.

“I have been working with Abbie Hutchinson (NUSU President), Eleanor McCarthy (NUSU PG Officer), Colin Campbell, and Lucy Backhurst to plan for our institutional approach to assessment in 2021-22, with input from our Education Deans.

Learning from our experience last year, we are keen to be proactive this year in communicating the University’s overall approach to assessment and the potential use of a Safety Net should the need arise. As a result, I have recorded a video to distribute to taught programme students via the University’s fortnightly newsletter. The newsletter will be sent to students on Thursday 21 October.

The video sets out our institutional approach to assessment. It articulates the elements of last year’s Safety Net which we have retained, and our approach in the event of a worsening Public Health situation that leads to a period of lockdown. We have agreed that the later will trigger a move to implement a full Safety Net for most programmes.

I am aware that detailed arrangements for assessment will vary considerably by programme, so want to encourage you to look at the video and consider whether you wish to communicate more detail to your students about their programme assessment either in advance of the video being released, or following its release.”
