A&F Research Seminar & “Meet the editor” session

10 November 21 13.30 – 15.45, Zoom

Guest Speaker: Prof Douglas Cumming

13.30-14.30 – “Covid, Work-from-Home, and Securities Misconduct” – research seminar

Abstract: We consider whether traders are more likely to commit securities violations when trading at home. We examine data pre- and post-Covid, where some traders work at home prior to Covid due to selection, and others were forced to unexpectedly work at home after Covid (treatment). The data indicate the presence of a selection effect where those opting to work at home less often exhibit misconduct. The data further indicate a treatment effect whereby forced work from home post Covid causes fewer cases of trading misconduct, although not fewer cases of communications misconduct. The economic significance of the effect of working from home is large and similar in magnitude for the treatment and selection effects.
