Royal Society JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme Open to Applications

The Royal Society administers the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship on behalf of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) to support excellent postdoctoral researchers who wish to conduct co-operative research with leading research groups at universities and other institutions in Japan. The programme aims to enable early career researchers to advance their research while contributing to the progress of research in Japan and counterpart countries.

The fellowship provides funding to support a residential fellowship in Japan for a period of between 12 and 24 months. The research undertaken must be on a subject within the Royal Society’s remit of natural sciences, including: physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences, biology and health and human sciences. Applications must be for bilateral (UK-Japan) projects.

Eligible applicants must:

  • Be a UK resident and citizen of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan
  • Hold a doctorate degree, awarded within the previous six years as of April in the year of application
  • Applicants in the final year of a PhD may apply, however awards will be dependent on confirmation of the successful completion of a PhD

It is the responsibility of the candidate to arrange in advance a structured research plan for their stay in Japan with their host researcher. Host researchers in Japan must be employed full-time at an eligible institution in Japan, which may include:

  • Universities and inter-university research institutes
  • Research institutions affiliated with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT)
  • Colleges of technology
  • Other research institutions designated by the Minister of MEXT

The Fellowship covers a period of between 12 and 24 months. Funding includes:

  • A monthly maintenance allowance of 362,000 yen
  • A settling-in allowance of 200,000 yen

Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research is also available to cover cooperative research-related expenses. Application for these grants is made by the Japan host researcher through their institution.
