ADR UK Research Fellowships 2022 Application Round Open to Applications

ADR UK Research Fellowships 2022 Application Round Open to Applications

Administrative Data Research UK (ADR UK) is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and seeks to transform the way in which researchers access the UK’s wealth of public sector data, to enable better informed policy decisions that improve people’s lives. ADR UK is made up of four national partnerships (ADR England, ADR Northern Ireland, ADR Scotland and ADR Wales) and the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which ensures data provided by UK Government bodies is accessed by researchers in a safe and secure form with minimal risk to data holders or the public.

Funding is available to conduct research and analysis demonstrating the policy impact potential of key ADR UK flagship datasets held within the ONS Secure Research Service (or other ADR UK trusted research environments). Proposals are sought that meet the following four objectives:

  • Useful research: Proposals that will act as ‘pathfinders’ for conducting research and deriving insights from the dataset, and which showcase the potential for policy impact and public benefit.
  • Useful data: Proposals that will develop the data as a useful research resource for future users.
  • Useful engagement: Proposals that will foster opportunities between academia, government, the third sector and the public to allow fresh thinking to flourish and maintain public acceptance of the use of data for research purposes.
  • Community building: Proposals that will greatly boost the applicant’s development as a research leader in their field and include activities promoting the development of a wider community around a particular dataset or theme.

Priority datasets for the round are:

  • Longitudinal Educational Outcomes (LEO)
  • Growing Up In England (GUIE)
  • Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE)

Funding will be prioritised for applications utilising these three datasets and ADR UK is looking to fund a minimum of two fellowships on each dataset. There are some funds for fellowships outside of these priority datasets and so applications can cover the range of ADR England flagship data. If applications are made utilising ADR England flagship data outside of the priority list above, it is essential that applicants demonstrate policy-relevance and likelihood of impact and uptake in their research proposals.

ADR UK recognises the value of close collaboration with research project stakeholders and encourages fellows to consider how they might embed partnership working into the fellowship. Collaboration is, however, not an essential part of this fellowship opportunity.

Proposals are accepted from individual researchers from eligible ESRC research organisations, including early career researchers (where a mentor is mandatory).

The full economic cost of fellowship can be up to £175,000. ESRC and ADR UK will fund 80% of the full economic cost. The fellowship is up to 18 months in total, including a dedicated funded period of up to three months at the end of the research phase for the fellow to focus on impact and development opportunities.

Applications must be submitted by the deadline of 24 January 2023 (16:00).

Webinars will take place on 26 October 2022 (for LEO and ASHE) and 27 October 2022 (GUIE).
