Wellbeing Wednesday – Students’ Union

Welcome to this edition of the Business School Wellbeing Wednesday Update.  We hope you are safe and well.

Each Wednesday (during term time) we will post a staff blog highlighting wellbeing support that is available to Business School students within the School and from across the university to allow staff to pass on the information to students.

Spotlight on Newcastle University Students’ Union

This week we are highlighting your Students’ Union, NUSU.

NUSU is student led and will help you make the most of your university experience. Join a society, have your say, enjoy live music, volunteer and much more with the support of your union. Here is a snapshot of what is going on in the NUSU all year round.

Join a club or society

With over 180 societies and 65 sports clubs, this is your chance to get involved with something new. Want to meet likeminded people, and fill your social calendar with some great events? Join a Society. Want to get involved with Sport? We have both social & competitive sports for you to join in with. Find out more here.

What’s on?

NUSU events calendar highlights all the amazing events coming up in Newcastle. Events include live music, table tennis, Zumba, football, lunchtime crafts, karate, walking with llamas and so much more, there’s something for everyone! Discover students’ favourite places to eat, drink and explore according to a recent NUSU poll.

Explore Volunteering

Volunteering is an excellent way to develop skills such as communication, leadership, events management, project management and teamwork which can all be transferred into future careers. Find opportunities to volunteer locally and globally with Go Volunteer who work with over 150 charities, schools, communities and voluntary groups.

We are Student Voice

As a Students’ Union, we have a big priority over representing students during their studies. From PECs to Strike Mitigation, we strive to improve processes, provide support, and lobby the University when necessary, all overseen by our Education Officer and their large network of Study Reps.

We also represent in all aspects of student life. Your ‘Sabbs’ are annually elected by students to represent their interests, make positive change, and hold the University to account. They represent you in all areas of student life and are always on hand to listen. Meet the team by clicking here. In addition, there are several community groups to ensure that all underrepresented groups have a safe space to feel represented and are able to engage with other like-minded people.

Support and Advice

The Support and Advice Hub is a space in the Students’ Union where you can go to access support, advice and take-off necessities for your health and wellbeing. The Support and Advice Hub houses two services, each offering bespoke support or advice on a wide range of topics.

Student Advice Centre

The first is the Student Advice Centre which provides free confidential advice on anything academic, financial, personal, or housing-related. This service is independent of the University, so it may be an option if you would like help from another party.

Welfare & Support Centre

The second is the Welfare and Support Centre. Taking an intersectional and holistic approach to wellbeing, you can use this service for any welfare-related concern you may have. Here you can find an array of resources, friendly faces, and people who can point you in the right direction should you need support elsewhere. We are located on the ground floor of the Students’ Union so please pop in or if you prefer, check out all of our online resources.
