Wellbeing Wednesday – Winter in Newcastle

Welcome to this edition of the Business School Wellbeing Wednesday Update.  We hope you are safe and well.

Each Wednesday (during term time) we will post a staff blog highlighting wellbeing support that is available to Business School students within the School and from across the university to allow staff to pass on the information to students.

Upcoming Events:

£1 Breakfast and Lunch!

As part of an affordable meal trial, students will be able to purchase the following value options for £1 between the 5th-16th December;

  • Breakfast 10-11.30am- Porridge pot with hot or cold drink
  • Lunch 12-2pm- Soup and a bun

There is limited availability each day and you must remember to bring your student card to avail of this offer.

Spotlight on… Winter in Newcastle

If you’re spending December or the Winter Break in and around Newcastle, there are many events offered across the University and city for you to take part in. From Christmas crafting at the Library, to Cook-Along events with ResLife, to wintery ‘Walk and Talk’ sessions with the Chaplaincy, there’s sure to be something that interests you. Have a look below at all the activities and events – some do require you to sign up in advance!

While many services across the University will be closed beginning 23 December to reopen on 4 January, support is still available to you – make sure to have a look at the ‘Wellbeing Support’ section for more information about what you can access during this time.

  • The student’s union has an array of festive activities coming up this month from stocking making to biscuit decorating. Discover more and sign up to activities here.
  • Join in with the Library Christmas Crafts on Thursday 15 December 12-2pm at the Walton Library and Tuesday 20 December 12-2pm at the Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms (Ground floor).
  • Come along to a ‘Winter Walk and Talk’ with NU Chaplaincy at 12 noon on the 22nd December and 5th Book your spot here
  • The ResLife Winter Break Programme will run from the 19th December to 3rd You can get involved in murder mysteries, bingo, Netflix parties and much more. Click here to find out more.
  • Enjoy some festive treats at the Christmas markets and try Ice Skating at the Life Centre.

Wellbeing Support

Over the Winter Break, you can still access support for your health and wellbeing should you need it – it’s possible to experience low mood or anxiety at any time of year. The Student Health and Wellbeing Service provides a number of online options, available for you 24/7.

Talk Campus – 24/7 support for all students

Silvercloud – free online CBT programmes available to all Newcastle University students

iNCLude – our self-help app is designed to help you take small steps to improve and maintain your wellbeing.

Wellbeing Support for Business School Students

The Business School has dedicated health and wellbeing support for our students:

Other Sources of Support:  Our Student and Staff Wellbeing Service work with local and national organisations to support you and help you maximise your academic potential and gain the most from your time here at Newcastle.

Student Support Plans: If you disclose a long-term mental health condition, supported by recent medical evidence, you may be able to access reasonable adjustments and support to help you engage in your studies. Students who have an on-going mental health condition or disability can access a Student Support Plan: disabilityadvisor@ncl.ac.uk.

Supporting survivors of hate crime, hate incidents, sexual violence, and spiking: Newcastle University is committed to eliminating all forms of hate crime, sexual violence, harassment, and discrimination within our community. You can disclose incidents of sexual violence, hate crime, spiking, and domestic abuse at Newcastle University using online disclosure forms accessed here and information about the Survivor Support Service within Student Health and Wellbeing Services can be found here.  

Postgraduate Support: We know that postgraduate degrees can be very different to your experience as an undergraduate and adjusting to any new way of working can sometimes be stressful.  As such, we want to ensure all of our postgraduate students know where to receive advice and support.

The 24/7 PG Advice Line is free and confidential and is available for all postgraduate students. Here you can talk to professionals 24/7 and receive advice on common life concerns e.g. family, mental health, stress, finances.  Call 0800 030 5182 or sign in online with the username: Newcastle and password: University to access support resources on the website.
