UKRI and ESRC Centres: Open and Thematic Calls

UKRI and ESRC have released a number of pre-announcements in relation to funding to establish world leading centres of excellence in particular areas, including the Centre in Climate Change and Health.  While applications for these centres will not be counted in the demand management measures in place for the ESRC’s open centres opportunity we need to ensure that there are no similar proposals being submitted to the schemes (open opportunity or one of the steered centres opportunities).

For all of these calls further details will be made available when the full opportunity is posted in February 2023. UKRI and ESRC are expecting to fund a single centre within each of the steered centre opportunities (two-stage process put in place).  For the ESRC’s Open Centre opportunity we are able to submitted 2 outline applications as lead institution (see attached documentation for a reminder on the process for the ESRC Open Centres call).

If you are interested in any of the steered centres opportunities, detailed below, or considering leading an application please could you inform Lorraine Smith (Lorraine.Smith@ncl.ac.uk), Senior Research Funding Development Manager, as soon as possible.

UKRI are looking for a centre that will address the challenges that climate change poses to population health, in a way that enhances both environmental and health outcomes.  The centre will bring together the right people, disciplines, institutions and infrastructure to provide evidence for this challenge within a 5-year timeframe.  UKRI want to fund a centre that will accelerate understanding of the links between climate change and human health and form an evidence base for policy makers.  It is important that the centre considers co-benefits, for example, the potential for climate change mitigation and adaptions strategies to have positive impacts on both health and the environment.  Proposals will require bringing a broad set of disciplines and sectors together, and employing systems thinking.
