Professor Carla Millar was formerly Dean & CEO at TSM Business School, and Professor of International Marketing &Management at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. Before that she had more than 30 years’ experience working in London for 3 MNCs, the University of Greenwich (as Head of Marketing) and City University Business School (as Dean of Executive Education). She was Unilever’s first female manager, and as an academic, became concerned about the low percentage of female professors, a problem she has since worked to solve. She was previously a member of the Executive Board of the LNVH, the Dutch Network of Women Professors that strives to end the under-representation of women in higher positions in universities, and a member of the UT Ambassadeursnetwerk, an advisory body to the University of Twente Board actively engaged in this same area.
Even in 2023, in spite of many pieces of relevant research, a high awareness of the subject, and quotas in abundance, women are still underrepresented in the higher echelons of our universities. Why is this? What structural barriers are at work, what barriers hamper career advancement both for academics and directors/managers? And why is there little movement in an era where opportunities for women to succeed have never been better! What is happening in the 2023university world, the focus on EDI, and what are the trends affecting work and promotion? Highlighting key concerns for the future recruitment of university leaders and the possible valuable impact of female leaders on boards, or as Deans or VCs, we look at recruitment, mentoring and success factors for female leaders.
