British Academy Global Professorships 2023 – Internal Selection Process
This programme provides mid-career to senior scholars – active in any discipline within the social sciences and the humanities and based in any country overseas – with the opportunity to work in the UK for four years.
Applications must be for new, coherent, and cutting-edge projects. The Global Professorships are expected to add significant value to the UK host institution and vice versa, and thus the projects must be significant, leading to novel and innovative collaborations.
Eligibility Requirements of Applicant
- Applicants must hold a doctoral degree (or have equivalent experience)
- Applicants must be available to take up an unpaid leave of absence, a longterm secondment or employment away from their home institution.
- Awards will not be made retrospectively, this means that the work for which support is requested must not have commenced before the award is announced
Value and duration
Awards are expected to run for four years from a starting date to be agreed with the British Academy. The starting date must not be before 1 March 2024 or after 30
September 2024.
The Academy will provide up to £900,000 per award
Internal Selection Process
Due to the requirements of the scheme, which specifies a limit of 4 applications per institution, Schools are asked to identify suitable candidates who meet the criteria, with Expressions of Interest submitted to Lorraine Smith (Lorraine.Smith@ncl.ac.uk) by 12pm on 6 September 2023. Expressions of Interest should include the following:
- A statement of, no more than 2 A4 pages, including:
- how the candidate meets the criteria of the scheme,
- how they will make a contribution to advancing the research goals and strategies of Newcastle University,
- the proposed project indicating the significance, novelty, and any innovative collaborations,
- CV of the applicant,
- Confirmation of support from the Head of School.

- Notification of supported applications: w/c 11 September 2023
- Proposal Development: 11 September – 1 November 2023
- Draft statement to PVC Research and Innovation: 16 October 2023
