1. Horizon Europe Insight Day: Information, Networking and Collaboration for Success (13 March 2024, Birmingham): https://iuk.ktn-uk.org/events/horizon-europe-insight-day-birmingham/

The main event will include a talk from the European Commission’s Chief Negotiator for Horizon Europe Association on “What it means to have the UK back in Horizon Europe for the programme and the European R&I Community” as well as DSIT’s Director, International Research and Innovation. The Commission will also talk about the evaluation of applications. A number of people, from academia to industry, will be sharing their experience of taking part in EU funded research. Several fringe thematic sessions have also been organised with the UK Horizon Europe National Contact Points.

The Research and Innovation Week (R&I Week) is the 2024 European Commission’s flagship event on research and innovation which will take place between 18 and 21 March 2024 in Tour & Taxis (Brussels, Belgium).

Celebrating the 40-year journey through the Research and Innovation Framework Programmes, the R&I Week 2024 will debate the future of R&I, shape the contribution to EU political priorities, and commemorate past and current achievements. The R&I Week 2024 gives you the opportunity to attend: Opening of the R&I Week (18 March), The EIC Summit 2024 (19 March), Belgian Presidency Conference on Innovation Procurement (19-20 March) and The European R&I Days 2024 (20-21 March). 3. MSCA Staff Exchanges 2024: https://marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu/calls/msca-staff-exchanges-2024

The Staff Exchanges funds short-term international and inter-sectoral exchanges of staff members involved in research and innovation activities of participating organisations. Lasting between one and 12 months, the secondments can be international, intersectoral or interdisciplinary. Staff members can be researchers at any career stage (including PhD candidates) as well as administrative, technical or managerial staff involved in R&I activities. Call to launch in September 2024 with deadline 5 February 2025.

COST Actions provide researchers from all sectors with funding for a broad range of networking and collaboration activities and opportunities within a network. COST does not provide funding for research itself, but for a broad range of networking and collaboration activities and opportunities, including meetings, workshops, conferences, training schools, short-term scientific missions (STSM), and dissemination activities. COST Actions are bottom-up and can be on any topic, however they must fulfill certain criteria in order to be approved, such as including researchers from at least seven COST Member countries, half of whom come from the Inclusiveness Target Countries (ITC). Proof of Concept grants provide support for previous and current ERC grantees who want to explore the commercial or societal potential of their work. Current ERC principal investigators (PIs) or ERC PIs whose grants ended less than 12 months before the 1 January of the year of the work programme. Deadlines of 14 March 2024 and 17 September 2024.

Weizenbaum Institute is an academic institution in Berlin, Germany that conducts independent, interdisciplinary and fundamental research into the issues of a digitalised and networked society. The Weizenbaum Institute’s Open Fellowship Programme offers researchers worldwide the opportunity to spend up to three months at the institute to develop, discuss and investigate new ideas relating to the topic of digitisation. The fellowship programme is open to researchers at any career stage worldwide. The fellows receive a monthly stipend to support their living expenses during their stay at the institute. Applications are now open for fellowships between 1 July and 31 December 2024. Deadline 31 March 2024.

Official development assistance (ODA) related funding

7. MRC/SAMRC South Africa-UK Health Research Collaboration calls:

MRC and South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) have launched three collaborative calls for proposals through the UK’s International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF). The joint research programme aims to promote collaboration between researchers based in South Africa, the UK and other African countries.

For each call, up to 70M South African Rand (~£3M) is available to fund several three-year projects per topic. Webinar (tbc) expected in February, with April deadlines as above.

8. Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (with MRC/NIHR) call: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/gacd-management-of-multiple-long-term-conditions/

Global health funding to address the management of multiple long-term conditions (MLTC) in the context of non-communicable diseases (NCD)—in partnership with low or middle income countries. Clear implications for reducing health inequalities. £5M available to fund several projects, over 3-5 years. Stage 1 deadline 15 May 2024.

9. MRC-Southeast Asia Collaboration on Infectious Diseases: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/ukri-southeast-asia-collaboration-on-infectious-diseases/

Apply for funding to collaborate with partners in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Singapore on infectious diseases with antimicrobial resistance and epidemics potential. Multilateral research teams including more than two partners are encouraged. You can apply for up to £1,000,000 from UKRI. Southeast Asia funding partners will provide co-funding to support their national research teams. Opening 14 March with deadline 30 May 2024.

10. British Academy ODA Challenge-Oriented Research Grants 2024: https://www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk/programmes/oda-challenge-oriented-research-grants-2024/

Proposals invited on specific global challenges for researchers based in the UK and Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa, Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam and/or Least Developed Countries to develop and/or deepen international research collaborations. The themes are:

Awards of 18 months and up to £200k to begin end of June 2024. Deadline 10 April 2024.

ISPF research collaboration grants provide small scale seed funding for collaborations between the UK and the participating ISPF countries/territories. Countries initially joining this call include Egypt, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam. Grants of up to £80k (£100k fEC) are offered to collaborate with international partners. Deadline 12 March 2024.

12. NERC/AHRC Amazon +10 initiative: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/amazon-10-initiative-research-expeditions-to-the-amazon/

Apply for funding from this Brazil-led programme to collaborate with Brazilian partners on research expeditions to increase our knowledge of the biodiversity and socio-cultural diversity of the Brazilian Amazon. A total of £4M is available for four projects (£1M fEC of UKRI component), up to 3 years. Deadline 30 April 2024.

We invite UK researchers to partner up with their legal Amazon counterparts to apply for this opportunity. Grants for UK researchers’ participation will range from £80k up to £100k to develop sustainable development models for the Brazilian Amazon. Duration up to 24 months, deadline 29 April 2024.

14. BBSRC/NERC Sustainable and Resilient Aquaculture Systems in Southeast Asia: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/sustainable-and-resilient-aquaculture-systems-in-southeast-asia/

Apply for funding to undertake interdisciplinary research for the development of sustainable, resilient and productive aquaculture in Southeast (SE) Asia. Projects must include project co-leads (international) in the eligible country or countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam), take a systems-approach to addressing challenges and be co-created with local partners and end-users. A total of £12M available to fund four projects. UKRI will fund £2.5-3M per project. Notification of Intent 23 February with deadline 9 May 2024.

15. UKRI Ayrton challenge programme (outlines): https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/the-ukri-ayrton-challenge-programme-outlines/

Apply for funding for interdisciplinary, challenge-led research projects enabling the transition to low carbon energy in developing countries. UKRI will fund around 10 projects between £2 to £3 million for up to three years. UK component funded at 80% fEC while partners in countries on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Development Assistance Committee (DAC) list will be funded at 100% of fEC. Deadline 9 April 2024.

These schemes are for scientists based in the UK who want to stimulate collaborations with leading scientists overseas through either a one-off visit or bilateral travel. Funding up to £12k available dependent on duration and exchange frequency (with additional funding through cost share for Italy, Japan, Taiwan, China). Three rounds with deadlines of 6 March 2024, 5 June 2024 and 26 September 2024.

 17. JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship: https://royalsociety.org/grants-schemes-awards/grants/jsps-postdoctoral

This scheme is for scientists in the UK (in the remit of natural sciences) who are at an early stage of their career and wish to conduct research in Japan. Deadline 6 March 2024.

Apply for grant funding to support research projects focused on the fundamentals of engineering biology and cross-cutting technologies. Your proposal must involve researchers from Japan and the UK. Projects up to 3 years funded at £1M (80% fEC) for the UK component and ¥234M for the Japanese component. Deadline 16 April 2024.

Apply for funding to support research projects focused on engineering biology for novel therapies and diagnostics research. We are looking for internationally competitive, full-scale collaborative and innovative partnerships. This funding will support joint research activities with specific funding to enable a comprehensive mobility element. Medical Research Council (MRC) will provide matched funding and bi-lateral support with the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) for up to three years. Expression of interest deadline 28 February 2024 with full proposal deadline 16 April 2024.

21. AHRC/ESRC International Fellowships for Doctoral and Early Career Researchers 2024: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/international-fellowships-for-doctoral-and-early-career-researchers-2024/

Apply to undertake a funded fellowship at an international cultural institution. Fellowships are available at: US (Harry Ransom Center; Huntington Library; Library of Congress; Smithsonian Institution; Yale Centre for British Art), Japan (National Institutes for the Humanities), China (Shanghai Theatre Academy). You will receive £1,000 for travel and visa costs (£1,200 for travel to Japan and China) and £1,925 for each month of the fellowship. You can apply for two to six months of funding. Deadline 12 March 2024.

22. NERC Environmental sciences: Global Partnerships Seedcorn Fund 2024: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/environmental-sciences-global-partnerships-seedcorn-fund-2024/

Apply for funding to create new and sustainable global partnerships within Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) remit. Applications must include at least one new international partner, focus on activities that require international expertise, and show long-term potential. The maximum full economic cost (fEC) is £100k, for up to two years. Applications including partners in Brazil or Taiwan may be eligible for co-funding. Deadline 25 April 2024.

23. Use of the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source (ISIS), UK 2024: https://www.isis.stfc.ac.uk/Pages/Malaysia-Indonesia.aspx

Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) and the United Kingdom’s Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) invite applications for the Use of the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source (ISIS). The aim of the programme is to support Malaysian researcher needs, both in terms of learning about and using neutron and muon methods, and in applying these to science areas. 24. British Academy/Royal Society International Fellowships 2024: https://www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk/funding/international-fellowships/

The International Fellowships Programme enables researchers to work for two years at a UK institution with the aim of building a globally connected, mobile research and innovation workforce. Each award is expected to involve a specific and protected research focus with the award holder undertaking high quality, original research. The International Fellowships offer support for two years. Deadline for submission is 13 March 2024.
