British Academy/Leverhulme Small Research Grants

The next round of the BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grants scheme opens on Wednesday 10th April 2024. The deadline for submissions is 5th June 2024.

This call is our most popular funding scheme and we submit a significant number of applications from the school. In order to manage the application process we are introducing some internal deadlines to manage applications. This will enable us to provide the best possible support for applications, and help to ensure they are of the highest possible quality.

Anyone interested in applying to this scheme will need to submit an expression of interest by Wednesday 1st May 2024. Please submit a project title and brief outline (2-3 sentences) of your proposed project to nubs.research@ncl.ac.uk by 5pm on the 1st May.  Applicants will also be required to have at least a first draft of their costs by Wednesday 22nd May. We will not be able to support applications that do not adhere to this timetable.

Whilst the BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grants are small in size (up to £10,000 per award), the volume of applications is large and success rates can be as low at 10%. Applicants are required to pass a high-quality threshold, which is assessed by expert academics in a similar way to the long-established peer review process, to become eligible for receiving Small Research Grant funding. Grants are then randomly allocated to those who pass the threshold. In order to ensure as many applications as possible pass the high-quality threshold we will endeavour to allocate all applicants in the school a peer reviewer to assist with their application.
