1. NEW: Event Report on “R&I in the next EU budget: Investing in Europe’s Prosperity and Competitiveness”, co-organised by the Coimbra Group: https://www.coimbra-group.eu/more-funding-for-ri-needed-in-the-next-eu-budget/
The event gathered together different voices from across the R&I landscape to demonstrate strong alignment around a key message: FP10 needs a high and ambitious budget to create a collaborative R&I framework that will help Europe strengthen its competitiveness and prosperity.
2. NEW: Draft Horizon Europe Work Programme Part With New Horizontal Activities Now Published: https://www.ukro.ac.uk/news/draft-work-programme-for-horizontal-bridging-actions-now-published/
The European Commission has published the draft Horizon Europe Work Programme part for ‘Horizontal Activities’ – which includes new calls for proposals – on its Comitology Register. These new funding opportunities include calls on Biodiversity and Bridging Actions, and are in addition to existing calls in the 2026-27 Work Programme published in December 2025.

4. NEW: FMS Horizon Europe Symposium 2026, Date: Thursday 9th July, Dame Margaret Barbour Building, 3.17, (10.00-12:30)
Interested in European funding for research and innovation? Join us at the FMS Horizon Europe Symposium to explore collaborative funding opportunities. The event will provide an overview of Horizon Europe, how to identify and interpret relevant call topics, and build effective EU partnerships. You will also hear first-hand from colleagues with experience of Horizon Europe projects during a panel discussion, sharing insights on working in consortia, delivering impact, and lessons learned. The British Academy will host a one-day workshop on 30 June 2026 for UK-based social sciences and humanities (SSH) researchers interested in Horizon Europe Pillar 2 opportunities under the 2026–27 Work Programme. The session will explore how SSH expertise contributes across Pillar 2 clusters, with input from the European Commission (DG RTD) and stakeholders on building competitive proposals and navigating the programme. A small pot of funding has become available for the Horizon Europe Travel Fund and is now open to support Newcastle University staff developing grant proposals. The fund offers small awards (e.g. £500-£1,000) to cover travel and subsistence for meeting EU partners, National Contact Points or brokerage events. We will consider requests in two rounds, the first deadline is 17 June 2026 and the second is 8 July 2026 (if funds are still remaining). All expenditure must be made by 31 July 2026, even if trips occur afterwards. Please submit your request here.

14. NOW OPEN: Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowships 2026: https://marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu/actions/postdoctoral-fellowships
The MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships 2026 call will open in April. Postdoctoral Fellowships (PF) target researchers holding a PhD with up to eight years of research experience who wish to carry out their research activities abroad, acquire new skills and develop their careers. PFs help researchers gain experience in other countries, disciplines and non-academic sectors. 15. NEW: Wiko Early Career Fellowships Open for Researchers Across Disciplines Worldwide: https://www.wiko-berlin.de/en/becoming-a-fellow/wiko-early-career-calls
The Institute for Advanced Study Berlin (Wiko) is inviting applications for its Early Career Fellowship Programme, which offers residential fellowships in Berlin for outstanding postdoctoral researchers aiming to advance a defined research project. The programme includes two streams: humanities and social sciences, and life and natural sciences. Applicants must hold a PhD and demonstrate strong publication records, such as a monograph for humanities scholars or multiple high-impact articles for science and social science candidates. Fellowships last 10 months for humanities and social sciences, and three to five months for life and natural sciences, with financial support provided through teaching replacement costs of up to €60,000. Deadline: 1 September 2026 for humanities and social sciences, and 1 November 2026 for life and natural sciences.
16. NEW: Virtual Institute for the Carbon Cycle (VICC) — Notice of upcoming Expressions of Intent (EOI): https://www.schmidtsciences.org/
The goal of VICC is two-fold: (a) improve understanding and reduce uncertainty of both natural and anthropogenic components of the global carbon budget to inform (detect/attribute) mitigation in carbon emissions, and (b) improve understanding and reduce uncertainty on future changes in the global carbon cycle, including carbon-climate feedbacks, to inform climate policies. VICC is soliciting short EOIs for projects that will enable these two goals. They aim to support several multidisciplinary and international teams of researchers by providing sustained funding for up to 5 years and networking support to pursue research with revolutionary promise. Projects may hinge on improving mechanistic understanding of key components of the carbon cycle, modeling, observational, or data assimilation improvements, or any combination thereof. Anticipated EOI release is mid-June 2026 with anticipated deadline in mid-August 2026. For any questions about this notice, email carbon@schmidtsciences.org with “VICC EOI” in the subject line. 17. 80 new COST Actions, that will officially start in Autumn 2026: https://www.cost.eu/80-new-cost-actions-oc20251/
These new networks cover topics as wide and varied as phychosis prevention, silent fans, neuromorphic computing, vaccines for overall health benefits, artificial intelligence, conservation of modern art, and parental and children well-being. On Friday 12 June 2026 these new COST Actions (OC- 2025-1), including all Memorandums of Understanding, will be available on the COST website, so if you see a network that is of interest then you can apply to join. In the meantime, a booklet covering the actions is able to be downloaded. Potential applicants are also reminded that the COST 2026 Open Call opens on 31 July at noon CET and closes 28 October at noon CET with the COST Association advising applicants to ensure familiarity with the changes to the application process since the 2025 Open Call.
18. Jérôme Lejeune Foundation – Autumn 2026 Call (Down Syndrome Research): https://www.fondationlejeune.org
The Jérôme Lejeune Foundation invites applications for its Autumn 2026 call supporting research on Down syndrome (trisomy 21). Grants fund fundamental, translational and clinical projects aimed at advancing understanding or developing new therapeutic approaches. Two grant types are available: pilot grants (up to €50,000) and advanced grants (up to €80,000). Applicants must hold a PhD, MD (or equivalent) and a permanent position at an academic institution. The European Research Council has introduced the ERC+ Grant 2026 to provide additional support to leading researchers building on ERC-funded projects. The scheme aims to strengthen research impact and capacity. Further details on eligibility and implementation are expected. The submission deadline is on 2 September 2026.
20. Henry Jacques Le Même Architecture Writing Prize 2026: https://sfa.wiin.io/fr/
The Société française des architectes (SFA) invites submissions for the 2026 Henry Jacques Le Même Prize, an architecture writing competition exploring the relationship between writing and the built environment. Applicants must submit a text (max. 20,000 characters, in French) offering a detailed depiction of a place centred on a constructed building; entries may be in any literary genre and submitted individually or in teams of up to three. The competition is open to all, regardless of nationality. Prizes are €2,500 for first place, €1,000 for second, and €500 for third. Deadline: 7 September 2026.
21. SPRIND Launches FUNKE Quantum Challenges for Sensing Data Integration: https://www.sprind.org/en/actions/challenges
Bundesagentur fur Sprunginnovationen (SPRIND, German Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation) has opened applications for two FUNKE challenges focused on quantum sensing and data use. The FUNKE Quantum-Driven Intelligence Challenge focuses on connecting high-precision quantum sensor data with existing data sources, models and sensor systems to derive decision-relevant information that is not otherwise accessible. Supported projects are expected to develop practical applications or scenarios where quantum sensing integration materially improves existing systems, models or analytical methods. Stage 1 will support 15 teams for four months at €200,000 per project. Stage 2 will support 10 teams for two months at €100,000 per project. The FUNKE Quantumsense Exploration Challenge supports teams developing methods to identify and leverage new quantum sensors or quantum systems for sensing applications more rapidly, systematically and at greater scale. Possible approaches include AI-supported exploration based on physical simulations and systematic, AI-assisted analysis of cross-disciplinary scientific literature. This second challenge will support 10 teams in Stage 1 for five months at €450,000 per project, followed by Stage 2 support for seven teams for two months at €150,000 per project. Deadline: 6 September 2026
22. SPRIND Launches Orbital Bioworks Challenge: https://www.sprind.org/en/actions/challenges/orbital-bioworks
Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen (SPRIND – German Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation) has opened its Orbital Bioworks Challenge to support the development and validation of the first commercially viable use cases for orbital biotechnology with a clear microgravity advantage. Projects should create experimental and technological foundations in the three focus areas of cell-free peptide manufacturing, differentiation of stem cells and organ-on-a-chip for drug testing. The goal is to implement biopharmaceutical production processes in LEO in a reproducible, scalable, and economically assessable manner. These developments are intended to be the starting point for the build-up of a European, commercially oriented industry in the field of in-space biomanufacturing. Financial support is stated as up to €250,00 in Stage 1 and up to €1.4 million in Stage 2. Deadline: 3 July 2026

The European Commission has published the final versions of the 2026-27 call topics for all the clusters and missions and a number of the other main funding instruments (to download work programmes see here: https://research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu/funding/funding-opportunities/funding-programmes-and-open-calls/horizon-europe/horizon-europe-work-programmes_en ). 25. NOW OPEN: Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Networks 2026: https://marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu/actions/doctoral-networks
MSCA Doctoral Networks fund doctoral programmes, consisting of a European consortium recruiting up to 15 PhD studentships, designed to respond to identified needs in various research and innovation areas. MSCA Doctoral Networks design doctoral programmes to develop entrepreneurial, innovative doctoral candidates. The aim is to equip these candidates with the right combination of research-related and transferable competencies, enhancing their career perspectives both within and outside academia. The funded Doctoral Networks will hold open recruitment procedures throughout the course of the maximum 48-month project and the recruited candidates must meet specific eligibility criteria outlined in the MSCA Work Programme. 26. European Innovation Council calls 2026
EIC Pathfinder: EIC Challenges, deadline 28 October 2026. Through both open and challenge calls: For multi-disciplinary research teams to undertake visionary research with the potential to lead to technology breakthroughs (grants up to €4 million).
EIC Transition: Deadline: 19 September 2026. To turn research results into innovation opportunities, following up on results generated by EIC Pathfinder, European Research Council Proof of Concept, Horizon Europe Pillar 2 (societal challenges) collaborative projects and Research Infrastructures projects (grants up to €2.5 million).
EIC Accelerator: Deadline: Rolling until November 2026. Through both open and challenge calls: For start-ups and SMEs to develop and scale up innovations with the potential to create new markets or disrupt existing ones (UK applicants eligible for grants only, worth up to €2.5 million).
Applicants must first submit a short proposal, which will be reviewed and if successful applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal.
27. ZiF Visiting Research Groups Call (Bielefeld Centre for Interdisciplinary Research), https://www.uni-bielefeld.de/(en)/zif/
The Zentrum für interdisziplinäre Forschung (ZiF) at Bielefeld University is inviting applications for its Visiting Research Groups scheme. The programme supports innovative interdisciplinary collaborations, enabling groups of at least three post‑doctoral researchers to explore new topics, develop partnerships, finalise interdisciplinary publications, or conduct small research projects over 1–3 months. The scheme is open to researchers from all disciplines and all countries, with international participation strongly encouraged. ZiF provides €50,000 to cover travel, accommodation, workshops, and conferences. Deadline: 29 October 2026
28. NETIAS Opens Constructive Advanced Thinking Call for 2027-2029 Research Teams: https://netias.science/calls-for-applications/constructive-advanced-thinking-cat/open-call-constructive-advanced-thinking
The NETIAS Constructive Advanced Thinking (CAT) programme supports teams of 3–5 early-career researchers working collaboratively on innovative ideas to address societal challenges. Teams must be international and include members with PhDs awarded from 2017 onwards, with the PI holding a stable position. Successful teams benefit from funded short research stays over up to three years to develop ideas and build networks, with applications for the 2027–2029 call closing. Deadline: 13 September 2026.
29. Global Research Initiative on Open Science Call for Evidence Synthesis Projects: https://www.esf.org/grios-launches-open-call-for-evidence-synthesis-on-open-science/
The Global Research Initiative on Open Science (GRIOS) Call for Evidence Synthesis Projects, managed by the European Science Foundation, offers up to €80,000 in funding over a 12‑month period to support in-depth evidence synthesis reviews on priority Open Science policy topics. The call is open internationally and focuses on incentives for Open Science uptake and the effectiveness of research data‑sharing policies. Deadline: 20 July 2026
30. Total of 29 Positions Available in the FIAS 2026 Fellowship Programme: https://www.fias-fp.eu/fellowships/call-applications-20272028
FIAS administers a Fellowship Programme to strengthen scholarship and mobility in the social sciences and humanities by offering academic residencies in France to experienced international researchers. The programme is now accepting applications for the 2027/2028 academic year, with a total of 29 positions available across the institutions. Researchers from all countries are eligible to apply, as long as they have spent no more than 12 months in France during the three years immediately prior to the application deadline. Eligible applicants must hold a PhD and have at least two years of full-time research experience at the time of the application. Fellows will each receive a minimum net income of €2,200 per month for the duration of the 10-month fellowship. Social security, support for accommodation and travel expenses and a €2,500 research and training budget will also be provided. Deadline: 25 July 2026

These fellowships are offering senior researchers the opportunity to contribute directly to UK international development policy by integrating research and evidence into policymaking. Fellows will collaborate with policymakers on key global challenges, helping to strengthen evidence-based decision-making. The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation is offering grants of up to £5,000 to support cultural and educational activities that strengthen relations between the UK and Japan by promoting mutual understanding of each country’s culture, society, and achievements. Funding is available across a wide range of areas, including arts and culture, science and technology, humanities, Japanese language, health, education, and sport, and can support initiatives such as research collaborations, academic exchanges, workshops, language development, and creative projects. Priority will be given to proposals in areas such as science, health, environment, social issues, and Japanese studies. Applications from the UK and Japan are reviewed separately. 33. Up to $300,000 Available Through 2026 Kenneth Rainin Foundation Innovator Awards: https://krfoundation.org
The Foundation offers Innovator Awards to support research by individual investigators and collaborative teams to advance the understanding of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).Grants of up to $150,000 for projects by individual researchers and up to $300,000 for collaborative projects involving multiple investigators are available. The initial award period is 12 months, however recipients who demonstrate significant progress may receive up to two additional years of support. Deadline: Letters of Inquiry must be submitted between 3 August 2026 and 30 September 2026.
34. Gruber Prizes 2027 (Cosmology, Genetics, Neuroscience): https://gruber.yale.edu/
The Gruber Foundation invites nominations for its 2027 prizes recognising individuals whose groundbreaking research has led to fundamental advances in cosmology, genetics or neuroscience. Each prize includes a gold medal and an unrestricted award of $500,000. Nominations are open globally with no nationality restrictions and can be submitted by individuals, organisations or institutions. Deadline: 15 December 2026.

Apply for funding to deliver collaborative research projects with partners from the US, Canada or both to improve understanding of and resilience to wildfire occurrence and impacts in the wildland-urban interface. The full economic cost (FEC) of the UK component can be up to £1.58 million (for 36 months). Matched equivalent resources are anticipated from participating funders (NSF, NSERC, SSHRC and CIHR) for US and Canada applicants. Deadline: to be confirmed.
36. NERC Environmental sciences: Global Partnerships Seedcorn Fund 2026: https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/environmental-sciences-global-partnerships-seedcorn-fund-2026/
Apply for funding to create new and sustainable global partnerships within NERC remit. Applications must: include at least one new international partner, focus on activities that require international expertise, and show long-term potential. The full economic cost (FEC) of your project can be up to £100,000. NERC will fund 80% of the FEC, for up to two years. Applications including partners in Brazil or Taiwan may be eligible for co-funding from FAPESP or NSTC, respectively. Deadline: 16 July 2026
37. Wellcome and Nature Launch $1 Million Prize for Mental Health Science: https://wellcome.org/insights/articles/worlds-largest-global-prize-mental-health-science-launches
Wellcome has launched the world’s largest global prize for mental health science-a $1 million award recognising breakthrough interventions for conditions such as depression, anxiety and psychosis. Open to researchers, teams and SMEs worldwide, the prize aims to accelerate innovations with real-world impact and scalable benefits, judged on criteria including novelty, effectiveness and engagement with lived experience. Three finalists will each receive $250,000. The awards are intended to further the recipients’ research. Applications have opened for the latest round of Darwin Plus grants supporting environmental projects across the UK Overseas Territories (UKOTs). The UK government initiative provides financial support for activities focused on biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and environmental capacity building. The scheme welcomes applications from UKOT governments, NGOs, research institutions, private sector organisations and other stakeholders. The deadlines for applications are 15 June 2026 for Darwin Plus Main Projects; 25 June 2026 for Darwin Plus Local; 7 September 2026 for Darwin Plus People and Skills; and 14 September 2026 for Darwin Plus Strategic.
