Engaging with UK Parliament: an introduction

Thursday 10 March | 10:30-12:30 | Hybrid: Henry Daysh 10.01 and via Zoom

Register online here: Engaging with UK Parliament: an introduction (ncl.ac.uk) All HaSS staff and PGRs are welcome to attend the session, regardless of contract type or discipline; we ask if your research relates to social science purely for our own reporting processes to the ESRC.

As ‘crisis’ and ‘corruption’ increasingly dominate political headlines, how can our research help to hold governments to account and inform decisions being made at the highest levels? This session will be the first of a long-term series exploring the benefits and challenges of engaging with UK parliament. It will introduce participants to some of the routes for engaging parliament and parliamentarians with their research, as well as exploring how to start translating research for a parliamentary audience. We will also be joined by Dr Rachel Gordon, who will share her recent experiences of engaging parliament with gaming and gambling research. The session will close with a discussion forum on next steps for exploring policy pathways in HaSS.

Who is this session suitable for?

  • Those with little or no experience of engaging with government bodies and representatives, and/or policy pathways to impact.
  • Those who would like to start thinking about the impact of their research on policy and aren’t sure where to start.
  • Those interested in developing a core understanding of the different routes to engage UK Parliament with research, either for application to their own research or for facilitating discussions in schools, research groups, or similar.
