Philip Leverhulme Prizes 2023: Internal Process

The call for the next round of Philip Leverhulme Prizes will open in January 2023.

Philip Leverhulme Prizes are designed to recognise and facilitate the work of outstanding research
scholars of proven achievement, who have made and are continuing to make original and significant contribution to their particular field. They are for researchers at an early stage of their career whose work has had an international impact and whose future research career is exceptionally promising. These funds (worth £100,000) can be used for any research purpose.

Institutions are able to submit 3 nominations to each of the prize subject areas, which for 2023
are:
• Biological Sciences
• History
• Law
• Mathematics and Statistics
• Philosophy and Theology
• Sociology and Social Policy

Please note that excluded fields are study are:
• studies of disease, illness and disabilities in humans and animals
• research that is intended to inform clinical practice or the development of medical
applications

Nominees Eligibility
Nominees must hold either a permanent post or a long-term fellowship that would extend beyond
the duration of the Philip Leverhulme Prize, and should have been awarded their doctoral degree no more than ten years prior to the closing date for nominations (the date on which the degree was
confirmed by the awarding institution).

Internal Selection Process
Please could Directors of Research/Expertise identify and work with suitable candidates to submit
the following documentation to Lorraine Smith (Senior Research Funding Development Manager) by close of business on Monday 13th March 2023.
Following approval by your Director of Research (DoR) or Director of Expertise (DoE), please can
nominees submit the following documentation:
• Nominee statement for each nominee including:
o Prize subject area they wish to be considered for
o Significant research achievement to date (400 words)
o Future research plans (400 words)
o How you would anticipate using the prize funds if awarded (400 words)
o What the award of the prize funds would enable you to achieve that your current
funding does not allow (400 words)
• CV for each nominee
Should more than 3 nominations be received for a subject area, relevant Deans of Research and
Innovation will review nominees and select applications to go forward for submission to
Leverhulme Trust. Subject areas which receive applications from across Faculties will be discussed
with the relevant Faculty Deans.
