Wellbeing Wednesday – Wellbeing Workshops

Welcome to this edition of the Business School Wellbeing Wednesday Update.  We hope you are safe and well.

Each Wednesday (during term time) we will post a staff blog highlighting wellbeing support that is available to Business School students within the School and from across the university to allow staff to pass on the information to students.

Spotlight on Wellbeing Workshops

This week we are highlighting some of the upcoming Wellbeing Workshops.

Wellbeing Workshop representatives will be in the foyer today between 10.00-12.00am to tell you about their workshops and answer any questions!

The Student Health and Wellbeing Service provide a wide range of workshops for students throughout the year. Please check the centralised workshop booking system for workshops that are currently running and their availability – Student Wellbeing Service forthcoming workshops (ncl.ac.uk)

Upcoming Wellbeing Workshops

Please find below a list of upcoming Wellbeing Workshops. Click here to book in.

Understanding how to attend to stress and anxiety – a compassionate approach (Wednesday 2nd November 14.00-16.00, Barbara Strang Teaching Centre). The first part of this workshop has been designed to provide you with an understanding of what anxiety and stress are and how they naturally impact your ability to function; work and cope. We will then connect this knowledge with tools and techniques to help you decrease the debilitating symptoms of stress and anxiety and help increase your capacity to manage the demands of daily life.

Managing Interpersonal Conflict in Group Work for Undergraduates and PGTs (Tuesday 8th November 11.00-12.00, online via zoom). Concerned about working with others in a group? Unsure about the ‘fairest’ way to divide the work? Feeling frustrated that others in the group aren’t doing their fair share? Working with others at university can be challenging, especially if you’re being assessed as a group. Join Nicky Gardiner from the Academic Skills Team and Ed Hillier from Wellbeing as they discuss some of the most common causes of interpersonal conflict in university group work and some strategies for how to manage these situations if they arise.

Self-Compassion (Wednesday 9th November 14.00-16.00, Barbara Strang Teaching Centre).

How often are we kind and caring towards others and yet do not give the same compassion to ourselves? Our inner critic wreaks havoc, making us feel dreadful by labelling us as ‘not good enough; lazy; failures; we must work harder’… the list will go on…. This workshop has been designed to help you learn about and practice self-compassion. This is not airy-fairy. It is grounded in research that shows how being nicer to ourselves reduces stress and anxiety; it helps us to function better and improves our relationships – with ourselves and others.

Anxiety and Presentations (Tuesday 15th November 11.00-12.00, Robinson Library room 201). Feeling nervous about your presentation? Join Nicky Gardiner from the Academic Skills Team and Ed Hillier from the Counselling Service as they discuss how to manage anxiety around delivering presentations. Nicky and Ed will share their knowledge of the subject and be on hand to answer any questions you might have about presentations and anxiety during the session.

Assertion – how to communicate well and improve relationships (Wednesday 16th November 14.00-16.00, Barbara Strang Teaching Centre). Do you find it hard to say “no” to others or to stick up for yourself? Do you find yourself getting angry or festering silently rather than being able to clearly say how you think and feel? If you’ve answered “yes” to any of the above, then come along for this informative webinar, where our aim is that you leave feeling more empowered to communicate well and get far more of your needs met – in all your relationships.
