Women in Academic Leadership research seminar Wednesday, 17th May, 1.30-3.30 pm NUBS 2.10

Professor Carla Millar, University of Twente

Even in 2023, in spite of many pieces of relevant research, a high awareness of the subject, and quotas in abundance, women are still underrepresented in the higher echelons of our universities. Why is this?  What structural barriers are at work, what barriers hamper career advancement both for academics and directors/managers? And why is there little movement in an era where opportunities for women to succeed have never been better! What is happening in the 2023 university world, the focus on EDI, and what are the trends affecting work and promotion? Highlighting key concerns for the future recruitment of university leaders and the possible valuable impact of female leaders on boards, or as Deans or VCs, we look at recruitment, mentoring and success factors for female leaders. The seminar will be preceded by an informal lunch at 1pm for attendees, courtesy of the Director of Research.

She Leads for Legacy

Monday 22nd May, online 7-8.30pm

A session in partnership with CIPD exploring the ways in which HR and other people professionals can better support Black women in the workplace. CIPD research shows that ethnic minority employees are more likely than those from a white British background to say they have experienced discrimination, that their career progression has failed to meet their expectations, and that they have felt the need to change aspects of their behaviour to ‘fit’ into the workplace. In this session we will be explore the barriers and workplace disparities for women from an ethnic minority background, and how organisations can step-up to attract, retain and develop diverse talent, to ensure that the workplace is both diverse and inclusive.
