News

1. NEW: ERC Scientific Council readjusts rules for resubmission: https://www.ukro.ac.uk/news/erc-scientific-council-readjusts-rules-for-reapplication/

The ERC Scientific Council has responded to concerns from the research community about recently announced resubmission rule changes for the 2027 ERC Work Programme by readjusting those measures. In a letter from ERC President Maria Leptin, the Council confirms that eligibility rules for the 2027 Starting, Consolidator and Advanced Grants will remain unchanged from previous years, excluding applicants who received a C score at step 1 in the 2025 or 2026 calls or a B score at step 1 in the 2026 call. Similar restrictions apply to the 2027 ERC Plus call, with the additional exclusion of applicants not retained at step 1 of the 2026 ERC Plus call, while eligibility for the 2027 Synergy Grants will exclude applicants with C scores at step 1 in the 2025 or 2026 SyG or other ERC calls, or B scores at step 1 in the 2026 calls. Note that eligibility of applicants for the 2028 calls will be determined only in the 2028 Work Programme.

2. NEW: MSCA Doctoral Networks – International PhD Student Tuition Fees: https://www.ukro.ac.uk/news/msca-doctoral-networks-international-phd-student-tuition-fees/

The European Commission has recently announced the results of the 2025 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Networks (DN) call where €617,18 million will be dedicated to fund 141 doctoral programmes that will train 2115 doctoral candidates in and outside academia. UKRO wish to remind UK beneficiaries that participation in the MSCA programme requires adherence to its rules and principles, including the proper implementation of the Grant Agreement obligations. Under Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, recruitment must follow an open, transparent, merit-based, impartial and equitable process as laid down in Annex 5 of the Model Grant Agreement and the European Charter for Researchers. UKRO recognises that tuition fees are a recurring issue for MSCA Doctoral Networks in the UK, particularly due to high international rates. Institutions can decide what fees to charge MSCA DN doctoral candidates, with approaches including full fee waivers, a reduced rate (neither home nor international), or charging the home rate. As MSCA doctoral candidates are employed as staff, any reduced or waived fees normally offered to staff must also apply to MSCA DN researchers.

Over the course of this year, securing access to EU Login accounts on the Funding & Tenders Portal via two-factor authentication will become mandatory. This implementation will be progressive and affected users will be notified individually in due time. The Commission will hold its next webinar dedicated to the mandatory roll-out of two-factor authentication(2FA) in the context of the Funding & Tenders Portal on Wednesday 13 May. In preparation for the event, the Commission has prepared a useful infographic, which serves as a 2FA troubleshooting guide. The webinar will be web-streamed live on YouTube on the event page. There is no need to register to participate.

The British Academy will be hosting its next webinar on Friday 19 June 2026, 10:30-12:00 UK time for UK based researchers in the humanities and social sciences interested in applying for European Research Council (ERC) grants. The webinar will focus on the ERC Advanced Grants.  If you would like to submit a B1 draft proposal to be considered for feedback during the webinar, please register your interest on the registration form and send your B1 draft to Barbora Krasova (b.krasova@thebritishacademy.ac.uk) no later than Thursday, 4 June at 12:00 (midday).

COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is a funding organisation for research and innovation networks. An online session open to researchers and innovators at any career stage and from all disciplines will take place 16th June. The event is free to attend and aimed at researchers and staff in UK academic and non‑academic organisations who intend to apply to the MSCA Doctoral Networks 2026 call, which opens on 28 May 2026 and closes on 24 November 2026. The session will provide an overview of the call, including eligibility rules, the funding framework, novelties in the 2026–27 Work Programme, and evaluation criteria. It will also feature contributions from Edward Ricketts (European Research Executive Agency) and Professor Richard M. Hall (University of Birmingham), who will share insights from their experience with the programme.

Innovate UK are pleased to announce the latest brokerage event for happening across the UK between 10-11 June. These visits will enable delegates to build partnerships, strengthen collaboration, and to accelerate joint participation in Horizon Europe. This in-person event will include pitches, and pre-arranged meetings involving UK and EU delegates based on their interested WP 2027 topic(s) in scope. Innovate UK will also host site visits, enabling delegates to informally network with each other and tour facilities along the way.

EMERGE‑EU: AI in Health Networking Visit for Emerging Researchers is a three‑day networking and capacity‑building visit in Brussels (15–17 June 2026) organised by UKRI and European partner organisations, aimed at early‑career researchers (R2–early R3) working in applied AI and health from the UK and selected European countries. The visit is designed to help participants navigate the EU research and innovation landscape, build international networks, and engage with key stakeholders, through presentations and practical sessions on Horizon Europe, ERC, EIC and COST funding, proposal development, pitching and matchmaking, policy discussions on AI in health and life sciences, and a Brussels university lab visit. Participation is free, though travel and accommodation costs must be covered by attendees, selection based on research fit and balanced representation. Deadline: 21 May 2026

14. Total of 29 Positions Available in the FIAS 2026 Fellowship Programme: https://www.fias-fp.eu/fellowships/call-applications-20272028

FIAS administers a Fellowship Programme to strengthen scholarship and mobility in the social sciences and humanities by offering academic residencies in France to experienced international researchers. The programme is now accepting applications for the 2027/2028 academic year, with a total of 29 positions available across the institutions. Researchers from all countries are eligible to apply, as long as they have spent no more than 12 months in France during the three years immediately prior to the application deadline. Eligible applicants must hold a PhD and have at least two years of full-time research experience at the time of the application. Fellows will each receive a minimum net income of €2,200 per month for the duration of the 10-month fellowship. Social security, support for accommodation and travel expenses and a €2,500 research and training budget will also be provided. Deadline: 25 July 2026

COST will launch its 2026 Open Call for new COST Actions 31st July, with funding available for up to 80 new research networks. The call supports innovative, interdisciplinary, and collaborative research networks across all fields. COST Actions enable researchers, innovators, and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds to collaborate internationally. Updates on what to expect in this year’s call, including any changes and new features.  Deadline: 28 October 2026

16. ZiF Visiting Research Groups Call (Bielefeld Centre for Interdisciplinary Research), https://www.uni-bielefeld.de/(en)/zif/

The Zentrum für interdisziplinäre Forschung (ZiF) at Bielefeld University is inviting applications for its Visiting Research Groups scheme. The programme supports innovative interdisciplinary collaborations, enabling groups of at least three post‑doctoral researchers to explore new topics, develop partnerships, finalise interdisciplinary publications, or conduct small research projects over 1–3 months. The scheme is open to researchers from all disciplines and all countries, with international participation strongly encouraged. ZiF provides €50,000 to cover travel, accommodation, workshops, and conferences. Deadline: 29 October 2026

A guide that maps all Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) funding opportunities for 2026–2027, including an in‑depth analysis of SSH‑relevant topics across the entire Work Programme has been released.

18. CEFIC-LRI Research Calls Open to Applications: https://cefic-lri.org/request-for-proposals/

The Cefic Long-range Research Initiative (CEFIC-LRI) funds research to address the health and environmental impact of chemicals, based on the need of the chemical industry to understand the long-term effects of its products and processes. It has launched two new requests for research on Safe and Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) Innovation and water-soluble polymer bioavailability. Applicants should provide an indication of additional partners and funding opportunities that can be appropriately leveraged as part of their proposal. Partners can include, but are not limited to industry, government/regulatory organisations, research institutes, etc. Deadline: 31 May 2026

 19. REMINDER: North Sea University Partnership (NSUP) Research Seed Fund 2026: https://nsup.webspace.durham.ac.uk/nsup-funding-calls/nsup-research-seed-fund-2026-now-open-for-applications/

Successful projects are expected to lead to outcomes such as third-party funding applications, larger-scale interdisciplinary collaborations, and significant joint publications. In its first year, the call will prioritise proposals addressing the NSUP key priority area: North Sea priorities: energy, the green transition, marine/maritime research, and resilience/security. We encourage interdisciplinary perspectives across science, humanities and social sciences related to these North Sea priorities. The selection panel will aim to achieve a balanced portfolio across these priority areas. Projects may request up to £25,000 for activities lasting 12–24 months, with each project researcher funded by their respective institution. Participation of each applicant will be funded and supported by their home institution. Proposals must include researchers from at least one Norwegian NSUP institution [University of Bergen, UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and University of Oslo], while proposals including more than two NSUP partners are strongly encouraged. Deadline: 20 May 2026

The European Commission has published the final versions of the 2026-27 call topics for all the clusters and missions and a number of the other main funding instruments (to download work programmes see here: https://research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu/funding/funding-opportunities/funding-programmes-and-open-calls/horizon-europe/horizon-europe-work-programmes_en ). 21. Opportunities for Researchers from the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) in Horizon Europe: https://horizoneuropencpportal.eu/repository/fe369bb2-b2b1-47ff-81ec-590b17d5b021

To assist SSH researchers in identifying funding opportunities, the European Commission (EC) has established a search engine within its online Funding & Tender Opportunities Portal. Certain topics with substantial SSH aspects have been “flagged” by the EC as SSH-relevant, and the search engine offers the option to quickly search for the specific priority ‘Social sciences and humanities’. It also allows for keyword and full-text search.

22. Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowships 2026: https://marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu/actions/postdoctoral-fellowships

The MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships 2026 call will open in April. Postdoctoral Fellowships (PF) target researchers holding a PhD with up to eight years of research experience who wish to carry out their research activities abroad, acquire new skills and develop their careers. PFs help researchers gain experience in other countries, disciplines and non-academic sectors. There are two types of PF. The European PF allows you to move within Europe or come to Europe. The fellowship is no longer than two years. With the Global PF, you move from Europe to anywhere in the world. The fellowship lasts up to two years for the outgoing phase, followed by a mandatory one-year return phase in Europe. PFs may also include short-term secondments anywhere in the world and could also include an optional 6-month placement in a non-academic organisation at the end of the standard fellowship.  23. Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Networks 2026: https://marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu/actions/doctoral-networks

MSCA Doctoral Networks fund doctoral programmes, consisting of a European consortium recruiting up to 15 PhD studentships, designed to respond to identified needs in various research and innovation areas. MSCA Doctoral Networks design doctoral programmes to develop entrepreneurial, innovative doctoral candidates. The aim is to equip these candidates with the right combination of research-related and transferable competencies, enhancing their career perspectives both within and outside academia. The funded Doctoral Networks will hold open recruitment procedures throughout the course of the maximum 48-month project and the recruited candidates must meet specific eligibility criteria outlined in the MSCA Work Programme. 26. NEW: $261 Million Investment by ASAP and MJFF to Accelerate Personalised Parkinson’s Disease Treatments: https://parkinsonsroadmap.org/news/261m-investment-toward-personalized-treatments/

Aligning Science Across Parkinson’s (ASAP), in partnership with The Michael J. Fox Foundation, has announced a $261 million investment to expand its global Collaborative Research Network, funding 32 international, multidisciplinary teams to advance personalized treatments for Parkinson’s disease. Published on 28 April 2026, the initiative aims to tackle the disease’s biological complexity and variability by accelerating collaborative, open-science research into factors such as aging, environmental exposure, co‑pathologies and brain circuitry. Building on more than $550 million invested since the network’s launch, the new funding will support teams over three years and strengthen shared research tools and datasets, ultimately speeding the translation of discoveries into improved diagnostics and precision therapies for people living with Parkinson’s disease. 27. Wellcome Leap Issues New $50 Million ‘Focused Antibiotics’ Funding Scheme: https://wellcomeleap.org/focused-antibiotics/

Wellcome Leap has launched a new three-year, $50 million Focused Antibiotics funding programme aimed at reformulating existing antibiotics to preserve treatment efficacy while minimising damage to the gut microbiome and reducing the development of antimicrobial resistance. The call seeks innovative approaches that target antibiotics to the site of infection, limit gut exposure, or enable direct delivery, with proposals aligned to two thrust areas: demonstrating microbiome-sparing antibiotic formulations in pre‑clinical models, and identifying gut microbiome changes that predict resistant infections with over 80% accuracy. The programme focuses on common outpatient infections—ear, respiratory and urinary tract infections—and is open globally to academic, public, non-profit and commercial organisations Deadline: 15 May 2026.  

28. Up to $80,000 Available to Fund Bone Marrow Disorder Research Through AAMDIF: https://www.aamds.org/fund-your-research/grants-program

The Aplastic Anemia and MDS International Foundation (AAMDSIF) is inviting Letters of Intent from new investigators for its 2026 research funding round, supporting basic and clinical research into bone marrow failure diseases. Priority is given to studies with potential impact on prevention, diagnosis, risk stratification, treatment, or transplantation‑related complications in aplastic anaemia, myelodysplastic syndromes/neoplasms (MDS), and paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH). Eligible applicants include postdoctoral fellows, instructors, and assistant professors within five years of appointment, with preference for those who have not previously received major individual research awards; there are no nationality restrictions. Awards provide $80,000 over two years, supporting investigator and research staff salary, consumables, and essential travel, with research permitted in the US or internationally but not in for‑profit laboratories. Deadline: 30 June 2026.

29. NIHR Launches New Global Health Research Programme with Call on Antimicrobial Resistance:  https://www.nihr.ac.uk/funding/tackling-bacterial-and-fungal-antimicrobial-resistance-sub-saharan-africa-and-south-asia/2026402

The NIHR has launched the first call under its new Global Health Research Themed Programme, focusing on Tackling Bacterial and Fungal Antimicrobial Resistance in Sub‑Saharan Africa and South Asia (2026/402). The call will fund applied health research on priority bacterial and fungal pathogens (excluding TB) to reduce AMR and improve outcomes for vulnerable populations, with emphasis on scalable, affordable interventions, health equity and strong international partnerships. Projects may address prevention, detection, treatment, stewardship and health‑system strengthening, including research involving maternal and neonatal groups. Grants range from £500,000 to £5 million. The call opened on 22 April 2026, with a webinar on 12 May. Deadline: 8 July 2026

 30. LAM Foundation to Launch Three Funding Awards in 2026 – LOI Window 1 May to 15 June 2026, https://www.thelamfoundation.org/investigators/funding-opportunities/
The LAM Foundation will open applications for three programmes supporting research into lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). Awards include: Patient Quality of Life Awards (up to $25,000 for one‑year projects improving patient quality of life), Pilot and Feasibility Research Awards (up to $50,000 for innovative early‑stage research), and Clinical Research Awards (up to $50,000 for hypothesis‑driven clinical studies addressing unmet patient needs). Eligible applicants include MD, DO, PhD, DVM holders, postdoctoral researchers, trainees, junior faculty and established investigators of any nationality. Priority areas for 2026 include new or repurposed therapeutic agents, new therapeutic targets, sex differences in LAM, and quality‑of‑life improvements. Deadline: 15 June 2026

The Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation awards the annual Heinrich Wieland Prize (Heinrich-Wieland-Preis) to outstanding scientists whose pioneering research has pushed the boundaries of knowledge in biochemistry, biology, chemistry and physiology. The focus is on discoveries that deepen the understanding of life on earth and pave the way for new medical breakthroughs. This includes research contributions from basic research in chemistry, biochemistry and the physiology of biologically active molecules and systems, as well as their clinical importance. The prize consists of a monetary award of €250,000. Deadline: 01 June 2026.

The LEO Foundation is one of Denmark’s largest commercial foundations. It provides Research Grants to support high-quality dermatology research projects worldwide. Applications are invited for research projects that improve the understanding of skin biology as well as the underlying medicinal, biological, chemical, or pharmacological mechanisms of dermatological diseases (excluding skin cancer) and their symptoms. The foundation also supports projects that address clinical issues among people who are at risk of developing, or have developed, a skin disease, including how it impacts their quality of life and the societal costs involved. Typically, research grants are between DKK 2-4 million for a period of one to three years. Funding may be used to cover salary, running costs/operating expenses, equipment, publication costs, travel and conference expenses, tuition fees for PhD students, and overheads up to 5%.
