Business School increases its research power by 127% in REF 2021

We are very pleased to be able to announce our REF2021 results.

Our REF2021 submission included 122 staff, 263 outputs, 9 impact case studies and a narrative detailing our research environment.

The results show that 27% of our research activity was rated as world-leading (4*) up from 18% in REF2014. Our GPA (Grade Point Average), which assesses research quality, has risen to 3.06 from 2.72 in REF2014. This represents a 127% increase in research power – a measure of research capacity – since REF2014.

We have improved our performance across all areas:

  • 80% (59% REF2014) of our outputs were assessed as world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*)
  • 72% (54% REF2014) of our impact case studies were rated as having outstanding (4*) or very considerable (3*) impacts in terms of their reach and significance
  • 100% of our environment statement (50% REF2014) was judged conducive to producing research of world-leading and internationally excellent quality

This success represents a huge collective achievement which reflects well on the school as a whole. We want to thank all academic and professional services colleagues who contributed to this exercise and supported the work involved in putting together our submission.
