NUBS Research Funding

We are delighted to launch three calls for School research funding.

The Early Career Researcher Fund (ECRF) is open to all colleagues who consider themselves to be an ECR (there is no fixed definition for an ECR, but it’s generally individuals who received their PhD less than five years ago, excluding career breaks – if you are unsure please contact us to discuss) who haven’t received internal (NUBS or University) research funding in the past two years.

The Ignite Research Fund (IRF) is open to all colleagues who haven’t been recipients of internal (NUBS or University) or external funding in the past five years (excluding those eligible for ECR funding).

The Mission-Oriented Research Fund (MORF) is open to all colleagues to support projects that align with the principles of mission-driven research, addressing significant societal, economic, and environmental challenges.

Further details can be found on the guidance documents below, and application forms are below also. Please note that due to current financial restrictions we cannot commit to funding travel – small amounts of funding may be available for UK travel, but projects involving international travel are unlikely to be funded. Costs relating to conference attendance are ineligible across all three calls.

Applicants should contact nubs.research@ncl.ac.uk well in advance of the deadline (and no later than 48 hours ahead of the deadline) to have their costs reviewed.

All successful applicants will be required to submit an Expenditure Request form for Faculty approval in advance of any spend.  All spend must be completed and processed by 30th June 2025.

The deadline for submission of applications is Friday 28th March 2025.
